Introduction to game: What do you know about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day?

Materials- large die, egg timer, questions about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day

Make a die out of a large juice carton girlguides.ca and put a ? mark on some (at least 3) of the sides of the die.

Cube Signs for St. Valentine Game- Print, cut out, and glue on die to play game.

Directions- The objective of the game is to get the most points by answering questions about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day. After studying and discussing this subject, divide the class into teams and have the students come up with questions. Set an egg timer for a specified time. Have a player roll the die on the floor in front of the class. If the die lands on a blank space, they do not answer a question. If the die lands on “?”, they are asked a question by the other player or team. If the player answers correctly, they receive a point (you can use tokens, write it on the board, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive a point. Players must collect as many points as they can. The game is over when the egg timer goes off. Whoever has the most points, wins. You can play this game individually or in teams. For an added challenge, you can also have “Lose 1 Point” and “Take 1 Point” on one or a couple of the sides of the die. When a player rolls “Lose 1 Point”, they must lose 1 point. If a player rolls “Take 1 Point”, they may take a point from any player they choose.

Sacrament of Matrimony (file folder game)- Answer different kinds of questions (multiple choice, True or False, Fill in the Blank, or Puzzles) about the Sacrament of Matrimony as you move around the board.

Introduction to game: For Catholics, the sacrament of marriage is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: The loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values.

Craft- Introduce today’s activity: Today we are learning how Jesus used the Bible to help him say “no” to the devil. Show the children your craft. Read the Scripture Memory Verse written in the pickle. Say: Just as we need bread we also need other nourishing types of foods such as meat and cheese. Jesus knows that the Bible is the best food for our souls. Just as it is important to eat food each day to stay healthy, it is also important to read the Bible every day to stay healthy in our souls. Today we will make hero sandwiches to remind us that true heroes are nourished by God’s word!

Hero Sandwich- from Jesus Defeats Satan: Lesson 1 (page 5, & 16).
On pickle: Jesus answered, "It is written, One does not live on bread alone." Luke 4:4

Directions:

1. Distribute the paper plates, crayons, pickles and glue. Have the children glue their pickles near the bottom edge of their plates.
2. Give the children one of their bread slices (it can be made out of construction paper or a sponge). Have them glue the bread to their plates above the pickles.
3. Have the children pick three of the sandwich items (cheese, bologna, salami, turkey, lettuce, tomato slice, etc. made out of construction paper). Have them glue each item onto their bread.
5. Give the children their second slice of bread. Help them tape the bread to the top of their sandwiches.
6. Have the children write their names on their plates.

pinterest.com- Fruits of Goodness
Students can cut out the "good" apples and stick them on the tree. After rearranging the apples students can leave the "bad" apples in the foreground to represent rotten fruit that is unable to grow on a strong healthy tree. The fruit is an analogy for people's actions and will enable students to comprehend the notion of making decisions based on our conscience.

Write a verse from today’s lesson on strips of paper or card stock. Cut out strips and glue strips of the prayer in the proper order on a piece of construction paper. (For younger students you can do this together as a group activity.) You can also play this as a game by dividing the class into teams and give each team the strips of the prayer. See which team can put it in the proper order the fastest.

Introduce games: A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. 6:45
What does this mean? You’ve heard it said that you are what you eat. If that is true, it is more true that you are what you say. Your words reveal your heart. The things you say, and how you say them expose and unveil the condition and attitudes of your heart. I doubt most people realize this. If they did, they would be more careful about what they said and how they said it. Most people think actions reveal the heart. There is even a saying we have all heard: “Actions speak louder than words.” It is out of the overflow of the heart that the mouth speaks. It is the tongue that sets the body on fire. It is not what goes into a man that makes him unclean, but what comes out of him. So are you a good person? Let’s see how good you actually are.

The Catholic Toolbox- How RUDE!
Do you respect everyone and treat them kindly at all times? During our daily contact with others we can show compassion and generosity by treating them with respect and courtesy. This dignified and respectable behavior that we give to others is part of what Jesus was talking about. Try your best to treat others as you would like to be treated and you will find that it will help you so much in everyday life with getting along with others. This game is a fun and exciting way to review what is considered rude behavior in today’s society. Players or teams roll the dice and move that many spaces on the board. Whichever color is on the space you land on indicates the color card that will be used. The player to your left will read the card aloud to you and you will try to answer correctly. If you answer your question correctly, you may stay where you are. If you are not correct, everyone says, “How Rude!” and you move back to where you were. The first player or team to get to the “FINISH,” square first is the WINNER!

The Catholic Toolbox- 2 games about making the right decisions.
WWJD- Making the right decisions in life is hard to do, but if you let Jesus be your guide and think, “What Would Jesus Do?” it will make it a lot easier.

Moral Dilemmas Card Game- Why do problems come into our life? People face problems every day. Some are harder than others. There are many choices that the person can have to solve his/her problem, but which one is the best? What would Jesus want us to do?
