- explain why we are to forgive others over and over again
- describe how we can be kind and forgiving to others

Review:
Prayer, questions and vocabulary words from last week’s lesson

Vocabulary Words: (Write the bold words on the board and discuss with class)
debt- something that is owed
servant- somebody who serves another
parable- a story with a hidden meaning
mercy- forgiveness

Plan:

Read story: “The Unforgiving Servant” and then ask questions

The Unforgiving Servant Matthew 18:21-22

One day Peter came and asked Jesus, “Lord, how often should I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Should I forgive him seven times?”

Jesus said to Peter: Not seven times, but 70 times seven times.

So then Jesus told him a parable of the Unforgiving Servant.

A king decided to settle accounts with his servants. One servant owed him a large sum, but could not pay it. Since the servant could not pay the debt, the king commanded that the servant’s land and property be sold and that he and his family be sold as slaves in order to settle the debt.

The servant fell down and worshipped the king, and begged him to have patience with him, promising to pay it all.

The king was moved with compassion and released him from bondage and forgave the entire debt.

That day, the servant went out and found another fellow servant who owed him money. He grabbed the servant by the throat and told him that he must pay what he owed.

The fellow servant fell down and begged the man to have patience with him, and he would pay what he owed. But instead of showing him mercy, he had the fellow servant thrown into prison.

When the other servants saw how their fellow servant had been treated they were very upset, and they went to the king and told him everything that the unforgiving servant had done.

The king then summoned the unforgiving servant and said to him:

You wicked servant, I forgave you the all the debt you owed because you pleaded with me to do so. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?

The king became very angry with the wicked servant. He had the unforgiving servant arrested, thrown into prison and tortured until the original debt was repaid.

Then Jesus said:

Your heavenly Father will treat you the same way if you do not forgive your brother from your hearts.

Jesus Always Forgives poem by Patricia Meyers (idea for a lacing craft)- Have students print this out or print out on computer and give it to your students to paste inside heart.

Jesus Always Forgives

Sometimes we hurt each other's hearts by
mean things said or done.
It's hard not to be mad or angry,
forgiveness isn't fun.
But after the "I'm sorry" if we'll say “it's okay"
and mean it deep inside our heart,
we choose the Bible way.
Jesus always forgives us,
I know that that is true.
When we say we're sorry,
He makes our hearts brand new.

Who is knocking at my door?

Need: one chair

Directions: The students sit in their own seats while the one who is “It” sits in a chair in front of the room, with his back toward the other students. Someone is chosen by the teacher to go up and knock on the back of the chair or floor. When “It” hears the knocking he asks, "Who is knocking at my door?" The knocker answers in a disguised voice "It is I.” “It” has to guess who the knocker was. The knocker then becomes “It”.

Simon Says Meets the Apostles
The idea of this game is just to teach the names of the Apostles. Assign the name of an Apostle to each kid. Then play Simon says, but only use the Apostle's name when talking to each student. And tell each student what Simon says individually. Example: Simon says the Apostle Simon Peter can take one step forward. Only the kid that is Simon Peter can move. The rest of the kids must wait for their turn.

Cube Signs- Print, cut out, and glue on die to play Fishers of Men Game

Directions- The objective of the game is to get the most points by answering questions about Fishers of Men. Have a player roll the die on the floor in front of the class. If the die lands on a blank space, they do not answer a question. If the die lands on “?”, they are asked a question by the teacher about Fishers of Men. If the player answers correctly, they receive a point (you can use tokens, write it on the board, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive a point. Players must collect as many points as they can. The game is over when all the questions have been answered correctly. Whoever has the most points, wins. You can play this game individually or in teams. For an added challenge, you can also have “Lose 1 Point” and “Take 1 Point” on one or a couple of the sides of the die. - explain the meaning of the symbolism in the Baptism ritual
- explain what happens during a baptism and that we receive new life
- identify the first Sacrament and explain what it is
- explain that you become members of the Church when you are baptized

Review:
Prayer, questions and vocabulary words from last week’s lesson

Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)

Galilee- region of ancient Palestine, now part of Northern Israel. It is between the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map).
Cousin- a child of somebody’s uncle or aunt, a relative
Baptize- to wash away the original sin
Jordan River- river that flows through the Sea of Galilee and empties into the Dead Sea (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map).
Holy Spirit- the third person of the Trinity, understood as the spiritual force of God
Godparent- someone who promises at a person’s Baptism to help that person be a Christian

Plan:

Say to the students: Who said this, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”? (John the Baptist) Then read story: "Jesus is Baptized" and then ask questions

Activities:

Introduce activities: What does baptize mean?

Show the students a picture of a Baptism. Say: What do you think is happening in this picture? Explain to students that Baptism is one of the seven sacraments and most of them have been baptized when they were babies so they do not remember it. Others are baptized later because you can be baptized at any age. Bring in items that are used during a baptism and ask the students if they have ever seen one. Discuss why you are baptized, what happens during a baptism step by step and what is said. Show a short video of a baptism.

-Who are godparents and what do they promise to do? At Baptism special people called godparents who are a man and woman that promise to help the parents teach the baby how to live as a child of God and as a Catholic. Both godparents must be Catholic and have to be practicing Catholics (they must come to Mass every week and be a good Catholic).

-What do you wear? A white robe as a sign of your new life.

-What does the priest or deacon pour on your head to show we have new life and to wash away your sins? Water. What kind of water is it? Ordinary water.

-When should children be baptized? As soon as possible after birth.

-At Baptism holy oil is put on you by the priest or deacon and they make the Sign of the Cross on your forehead. Long ago oil was used to mark people as kings and priests. Oil is a symbol of strength and healing. The newly baptized is anointed with sacred oil to signify that the Holy Spirit dwells within the heart of this new Christian. It's also a sign of being anointed to a mission to live and love as Jesus lived. The priest or deacon makes the Sign of the Cross on your forehead with what? Holy oil

-Why does your godfather light the Baptismal candle from the Pascal (Easter) candle? To show that we have new life.

-When we are baptized we become members of what Church? The Catholic Church.

-When you are born you have original sin. Who did we inherit original sin from? From Adam and Eve.

-When you are baptized it takes away original sin. It also removes every sin the person has done. How many times can you be baptizes? Only once.

-A priest usually does the Baptism and sometimes a deacon. But, if there is danger that someone will die without Baptism, can anyone baptize another? Yes they may and should baptize.

-What happens if you die and you are not baptized? You do not go to heaven.

-The Sacrament of Baptism is one of the seven sacraments. Baptism is the first sacrament because no other Sacrament can or may be received until you have been baptized.

Baptism of Jesus (file folder game)- The object of the game is to get to the Baptism of Jesus first by answering questions and following directions on the spaces along the way.

Place your markers on “START”. The player rolls the die and moves that number on the board. The player then follows the directions on the square they landed on. If they land on “Wild Card”, the player will state how many spaces they want to move ahead (between 1 & 4). Then the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud. (If they cannot read, the teacher or someone else can read it for them). On each card is a question about the Baptism of Jesus. If they answer correctly, they get to move how many spaces they wanted. If they are not correct, they go back that many spaces. The first player to FINISH wins.

Introduce craft: When Jesus was a little boy, where did he get his toys? (They made them). We are going to make us a toy(s) to play with.

Ring and Pin- Make a handheld "ring toss" toy. (The Picture Book of Kids' Crafts and Activities by Roxanne Henderson, page 98).

Stick and Ball Game
You can also make this with just a paper/plastic cup instead of a laundry scoop. Use a paper hole punch and make a hole in the cup near the rim to tie the string to.

Here is another version of the craft above using a plastic laundry detergent cap:

Make a hole near the top of the rim using a drill prior to class. Cut twine to about 2 feet long. Have students tie one end of the twine to the lid through the hole you just drilled. On the other end of the twine tie a large bead to it (2 beads if they are small).

To play- Hold the cup letting the string hang down. Swing the bead up and try to catch it inside the cup. For competitive play, whoever gets the most catches out of 10 or 20 tries wins.

Introduce craft: How well do you know the story “Jesus in the Temple”? Let’s find out.

Introduce game: When Jesus was twelve years old, he went to Jerusalem with his parents. The journey took four days and when they arrived the great city was crowded with visitors. Jesus saw many things in Jerusalem and was amazed at what he saw.

What did Jesus see in Jerusalem?

This is a memory game. Have the players seated in a circle. The first player begins by saying, "Jesus went to Jerusalem and he saw many things. He saw a ..........." He can say anything he likes, for example an orange, a pair of shoes, a camel, or a pet dog. The next player in line begins the same way but adds a second object after repeating the first. The third player also begins, “Jesus went to Jerusalem and he saw many things. He saw a ..........." He must repeat the first two objects and then add a third. So it goes on, but if a player can’t repeat or mixes up the order of the objects then he is out.

If you haven't got many players, the same children can keep adding more items. The game continues until one player remains or until time is up. Some lists get very long and are remembered for years by the players. A variation is to decide that the objects chosen must start with the letters of the alphabet in order, for example "apple, bat, cake...zebra." This makes it a little easier to remember. (You could also help the player if necessary so everyone can play).

Introduce game: How can we be like Jesus? Let’s find out how we can be a good son, friend, neighbor, and person like Jesus.

Change Charades (Jesus Grows Up)- This game will help your kids identify positive behaviors that will help them grow up just like Jesus. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry, page 70 & 71).

You can change this game to: Brother/Sister, Son/Daughter, Friend, Neighbor and have the children tell you how you can be a good ______ (Brother/Sister, Son/Daughter, Friend, or Neighbor). Call students one at a time to stand behind a chair and to toss a beanbag. Other students wait in their seats until you call them for their turn.

Or write the above on the chalk board and have the students throw a suction cup toy at it. Wherever it lands, they must tell you how you can be a good ______ (Brother/Sister, Son/Daughter, Friend, or Neighbor).

This game is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Jesus in the Temple (file folder game)- The objective of the game is to be the first to find Jesus in the temple. The players roll the dice and follow the directions on the space they land on. If the player lands on a space that is already occupied by another, BUMP that player back to the START space. If you land on a space with dice on it, roll again. The first player who lands on the temple wins.

Snacks:
