Sacrament of Reconciliation

Sacrament of Reconciliation: (for students that have not done Holy Communion yet)

Objectives: The students will be able to
- define mortal and venial sin and give examples of each
- explain what this sacrament provides us with- an opportunity to acknowledge our sinfulness, our estrangement from God and his Church, and our need for conversion and forgiveness
- explain that sincere sorrow for sin is the most important prerequisite for celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation

Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)

sin- breaking God’s law
God’s laws- Ten Commandments
Ten Commandments- laws from God that we must always keep
mortal sin- a very serious sin that we know it is wrong and we choose to do it any way
venial sin- is a less serious sin against God
penance- the prayers or good works that the priest asks you to do after you have confessed your sins
confession- to tell the priest your sins
sacrament- one of seven ways through which God’s life enters our lives through the work of the Holy Spirit
reconciliation- making friends again after a friendship has been broken by some action or lack of action
Sacrament of Reconciliation- one of the seven sacraments. It is when you confess your sins to a priest.
absolution- the forgiveness we receive from God through the priest in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation
contrition- the sorrow we feel when we know that we have sinned followed by the decision not to sin again
conscience- the inner voice that helps guide us to follow God’s law by doing good and avoiding evil

What are the Ten Commandments? They are laws from God that we must always keep. Let’s name the Ten Commandments and what they really mean. (Write each commandment on the board and discuss.)

Examination of Conscience:

beginningcatholic.com

theworkofgod.org

www.usccb.org- An Examination of Conscience for Children

Discussion: Ask the questions to the students and discuss with them.

So who were the first sinners? Adam and Eve.

What did they do? God told them to not eat from the Tree of Knowledge and they did not listen.

Do you do Confession yet? No

When can you do it? In second grade (or whenever your church does First Holy Communion) or after you have been baptized and have done RCIA.

Who do you make your confession to? A priest.

How often should you go to confession? At least once a year. If it is a mortal sin, as soon as possible. Any Catholic who has done a mortal sin cannot receive Holy Communion until they go to confession (receiving sacramental absolution). A mortal sin is a grievous offense against the law of God. This sin is called mortal, or deadly because it deprives the sinner of sanctifying grace, the supernatural life of the soul. To make a sin mortal these three things are necessary: (Tick off each thing necessary on your fingers to emphasize them to the students) First, we have done something that is seriously wrong. Second, we knew it was seriously wrong, and; third, we freely and willingly chose to do it. This means that mortal sins cannot be done "accidentally." If one of these conditions is missing, the sin is not mortal.

A person who commits a mortal sin is one who knows that their sin is wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin anyway. This means that mortal sins are done on purpose by the sinner and thus are truly a rejection of God’s law and love.

A venial sin is a lesser sin that can be forgiven in other ways, but it is good to confess them in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We receive special help to overcome them in this sacrament. The priest can help us to get to the cause of our sins and bad habits.

Why do we do confess our sins? We tell what our sins are so we can look at our sins and take responsibility for them. It opens ourselves to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible. When we recognize that we have offended God who is all deserving of our love, we sense the need to make things right. We need to know that our sins are forgiven. There is something in our human nature that calls out to know that our sins are forgiven. Confession is the visible sign (something you can see) of God's mercy that gives us the clear understanding that God has forgiven us. You must also be truly sorry for your sins and not want to do them again.

What should you do BEFORE you make your confession? We should prepare ourselves for a good confession by taking time not only to examine our conscience but, to excite in our hearts sincere sorrow for out sins and a firm purpose not to commit them again.

Who do we confess our sins to? A priest. Only a priest can hear confessions and give absolution.

What do you do during confession?

1. Greeting: The priest welcomes you warmly and greets you with kindness.

2. Sign of the Cross: Then you make the Sign of the Cross, which the priest may also make.

3. Confess your sins: You say, “Forgive me father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (state your sins)” and after you are done say, “For these and all my sins I am truly sorry.”

What happens after we confess our sins to the priest? The priest may then speak to you. He may try to help you to see the source of your sinful actions. Usually, we're sinful because we're selfish. He will also remind and comfort you of God's love for you. He will then propose an act of penance, which you accept to make satisfaction for sin and to amend your life.

What is penance?
1. Penance with a capital P is the sacrament in which all sins committed after Baptism are forgiven through the power received by the priest from Christ.
2. The prayers or good works that the priest asks you to do after you have confessed your sins.

Why do I receive penance? Forgiveness takes away sin, but it does not get rid of all the behaviors caused by sin. While we are not capable of truly satisfying God for the evil we have done and its consequences, we therefore must make satisfaction for our sin through some action or prayer that will show our desire to make amends and to repair something of the disorder, damage, or harm which our sinful actions have done. The penance that is given to you takes into account your personal situation and serves to support your spiritual good. The penance also depends on how bad the sin is. It may be a prayer, an offering, works of mercy, sacrifices or service to another. But this penance is in a real way our share in the Cross and helps us to be more closely joined to Christ.

Then what happens? The person says a prayer expressing sorrow for his/her sins, such as the Act of Contrition.

Then what happens? The priest will extend his hand toward you, or perhaps lay his hands on your head as he prays the Church's Prayer of Absolution:

God, the Father of mercies,
through the death and resurrection of his Son
has reconciled the world to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
through the ministry of the Church
may God give you pardon and peace,
and I absolve you from your sins
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, +
and of the Holy Spirit.
R/. Amen.

Do you leave then? No, you wait for dismissal. The priest may pray a short closing prayer with you. He may also simply say, “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” Your response can be very natural ... a simple “Amen,” or “Thank You” ... “Have a good day”. Then go to spend some time considering your Penance.

Why do we continue to need forgiveness if we are already saved? Even though we have been baptized and our sins have been washed away and have been forgiven, we must continue to return to the sacrament of Penance to cleanse ourselves of sin and receive God's mercy. We are always in need of God's forgiveness through the sacrament of Penance if we are to grow in a life of grace.

But isn't there something I can take along, so I won't feel like I'm forgetting something? Certainly! Some people bring a little piece of paper to help them remember what to say.

Can our sins be forgiven without sorrow? No. Even if we confess on sins and the priest gives us absolution, our sins will not be forgiven by God if we do not have sincere sorrow in our hearts. Sincere sorrow for sin is the most important prerequisite for celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Without it, your sins cannot be forgiven by God.

If it has been a long time since you have been to confession, will your sins be forgiven? Yes. God will always forgive us if we are truly sorry for our sins.

Act of Contrition Board Game- For 2 Players or 2 Teams

The idea is to answer questions about the Act of Contrition so players can roll the dice and move their pieces up and down the road attempting to capture their opponent’s pieces. The form of capture is unique because the captured piece is not immediately removed but instead is placed under the capturing piece. The capturing piece is placed on top of the captured piece to form a stack (if you capture an opponent’s piece, their playing piece is placed under yours). On his next turn the capturing player starts to move the stack of pieces back along the road towards his home position the number of spaces indicated by the throw count. When the capturing player reaches the home position the captured piece is removed from the board.

Introduce game: What is the Sacrament of Reconciliation? It is the sacrament by which sins committed after Baptism are forgiven through the absolution (forgiveness) of the priest.

Reconciliation File Folder Game: The objective of the game is to identify which one of the Ten Commandments the sin broke.

Introduction: What are sins? Breaking God’s law. What are God’s laws? The Ten Commandments. So what are the Ten Commandments? They are laws from God that we must always keep.

Players place their marker on START. The players roll the dice and follow the directions on the space they land on. If they land on a “?”, the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud (only use the questions that are age appropriate for your students). On each card is a question about sins and the player must tell which commandment the sin broke (they may say the commandment number or the commandment). Younger students can say whether or not it is a sin and why. If they answer correctly, they receive 1 token (milk caps, poker chips, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive one. When a player gets to the end of one game board, they keep going on the second game board and continue to FINISH. All players must land on FINISH with the exact number. When the player reaches FINISH they will count their tokens. After all players have made it to FINISH, the player with the most tokens wins.

Lesson Plan- Ananias and Sapphira/Lying (1st grade on up)

Ananias and Sapphira/Lying

Objectives: The students will be able to
- retell the story Ananias and Sapphira
- explain that lying is wrong and why
- identify which commandment lying is breaking
- explain why lying is not the answer to their problems

Review:
Prayer, questions and vocabulary words from last week’s lesson

Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)
lie- not telling the truth
truth- something that is fact or reality
honest- being truthful
trust- to behave with responsibility or honorably, taking good care or somebody or something, etc.

Plan:

What is a lie?

1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true. (“My room is clean.”)
2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression. (“I’m so sorry you didn’t make the team.”)

Think about a time when you told a lie. Why did you do it? How did you feel? What happened? Whether we want to admit it or not, lying is a part of life. Each of us has told a lie or two, whether it was to:

• get out of trouble (“I didn’t do it.”)
• avoid hurting someone’s feelings (“You look great!”)
• get something we want (“I finished my homework, so I’m going to the movie.”)

Unfortunately, some people do it more than others. And they don’t just lie about little things, but about big things as well.

Some think lying is no big deal, but in reality it is. Lying is breaking one of the ten commandments. Which commandment is it breaking? The 8th Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. (Catholic version)

Read story: "Ananias and Sapphira" (Acts 4:32 - 5:11) and ask questions.

Ananias and Sapphira belonged to a wonderful church. The people cared about each other and tried to do everything God wanted them to do. People would give whatever they could to help others who were in need. One member of the church named Barnabas sold his land and brought all the money he made to the apostles and set it at their feet as a sign that he was giving it to be used by God for whatever it was needed for.

Now Ananias and his wife Sapphira were very impressed with Barnabas and decided God would also want them to do the same thing. They wanted to please God too, so they sold their land. But Ananias and Sapphira decided that they didn't want to give the whole amount, they wanted to keep some of it for themselves. They talked about it and decided it was their money and they could do whatever they wanted with it. Besides no one would know how much they sold their land for any ways. No one would know that they kept part of the money for themselves. They would think that they were just as generous as Barnabas was.

Ananias brought part of the money to the apostles and laid it before them. Peter, through God’s power, knew what was in Ananias’s heart. He said to Ananias, “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it belonged to you, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not your own to use? Why have you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.” When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. Great fear came on all those who heard these things. Some young men who were there rose up and wrapped Ananias in his robes, carried him out, and buried him.

About three hours later Sapphira came in, not knowing what had happened to her husband. Peter asked her, "Is this the price you and Ananias got for your land?" She said, "Yes, that's the price." Peter said, "How can you lie to the Lord?" and at that moment she fell down at his feet and died.

The Bible tells us that God hates lying and that we should search out and examine our ways to make sure we aren't doing wrong. Lying takes many forms and sometimes we don't realize we are lying. It is important that we learn to detect the lies so that we don't lie.

Lies and God’s Eyes

childrensministry.com

In this activity, the children will make writing appear with water and crayons to show that even when we try to cover up our lies, God sees through it all.

Preparation: Mix a drop of blue food coloring and the cup of water in a resealable plastic bag.

Say: Mandy had a problem. She had borrowed her sister's china animals for Show and Tell without asking anyone. On the way home, Mandy dropped the bag of animals. Every miniature animal was shattered. Mandy swept all the broken pieces back into the bag and hid it under her bed before her sister got home. When her mom asked her what she used for Show and Tell, Mandy told her mom that she showed the class her seashells.

Ask: What did Mandy say that she brought to class?

Write "seashells" in orange on the paper. Have each child scribble over the word "seashells" with the blue crayon. Tell children that the blue marks they make are like the lies Mandy told to cover up what she had done. While each child is scribbling, ask him or her why Mandy lied.

After each child has had a turn, say: "Mandy took her sister's animals and broke them. Then she lied to cover up her mistake. We often lie to hide another sin, just as the word "seashells" is hiding under the marks you made. But God has very special eyes. He can see right through our lies.

Take the bag of blue water, and lay it over the paper. Let the kids see the words pop out.

Read Genesis 18:15 and ask:

• Why did Sarah lie?
• How is that like Mandy's problem?
• How are the marks we made with blue crayons like Mandy's lie?
• What can you do if you are afraid to tell the truth?

Say: Mandy lied about the animals because she was afraid of the consequences from breaking them. "Consequences" means what happens to you for doing something. Mandy will have to suffer the consequences of breaking the animals and now also for lying. If you lie, you need to be truthful as soon as possible. God can see through all our lies anyway! Most people will be happy to forgive you. It's always best to tell the truth

3. What happened to Laura? (She got into trouble.)
4. What happened to the Fib? (It got bigger and bigger because Jr. kept telling lies.)
5. How was the lie stopped? (Jr. told the truth that he broke the plate.)

The Truth!- Have students sit in a circle. Pick someone to go first and they ask a question. The person to their left must answer that question, then they ask another question. The person on their left answers that question and asks another question for the next player. The play continues around the circle and the first player must answer the question that the last player asks. Remember your answers must be the truth.

For example:

What is your name?
What is your favorite color?
Do you like basketball? Etc.

It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Liar, liar pants on fire!- Here is a fun game that helps children to recognize what lying is and how to resist it.

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

Snacks:

Introduce snack: (Draw a doughnut on the board). Say: What is inside a doughnut? (Nothing). When we lie, we are like a doughnut, we are empty inside.

teresaklassen.wordpress.com- Doubting Thomas Ice-breaker idea

Introduce game: Who did the two disciples not recognize? Jesus. Let’s see how well you can recognize someone.

Guess Who?

Materials: paper bag

Directions: Blindfold one student using a paper bag. Pick another student for the first student to guess who it is. The blindfolded student will try to find out who the person is by asking questions to figure out who they are. The unknown student answers the questions using a disguised voice. Once they have identified their fellow class member, that student can be blindfolded and have a turn.
Questions: Was it hard or easy to recognize the person from their voice?

Introduce game: Who wouldn't believe that Jesus was alive until he saw the marks of the nails on Jesus' hands and feet, and touch the wound in Jesus' side?

Thomas the Doubter

Need: Large nail with blunt point, 1 chair

Directions: A student is picked by the teacher to play the part of Thomas. He or she will sit in a chair with their back to the class. A large nail is put under the chair. While Thomas is turned around with his or her eyes closed, the teacher will choose a student to sneak up and take the nail and hide it somewhere on his person. When this person is ready, then everyone will say: “Doubting Thomas, where is the nail?” The teacher will then say. “Does _____ have it?” (This student may or may not have it). Thomas will then stand up and turn around. Will Thomas doubt what the teacher says or will he believe the teacher? If Thomas believes the teacher, he will say, “I believe _____ has it.” Or he will not believe the teacher and guess who might have the nail. Who ever has the nail is now Thomas.

Introduce activity: How do we know what is real or true? Two fun activities to emphasize the story Doubting Thomas.

Know For Sure Relay

Need: 2 different size boxes that have individual snacks for each child inside, tape boxes shut and do not tell the student’s what is inside the boxes

Directions: Set up a relay with two teams (if you have a lot of students, have more teams each with a box with snacks inside). Place snack boxes at another point in the room for each team to run for. Do not give the students any hints about what is in the boxes. The first student in line runs to the box, carries it back to his team and gives it to the next team member in line. This player funs it back to it’s starting point and leaves it there. The player returns and goes to the end of his team line. Repeat until everyone has had a turn.

Then hold up one of the boxes. Say: What do you think is in this box? Hold up another box and say: What about this box? Do you think both boxes have the same thing inside? Do you know for sure what is inside the boxes? How can you find out for sure? (By opening up the boxes.) We have to see with our eyes to know for sure what is inside the box don’t we? Let’s open up the boxes and see if you are right. (Let each student open up a box.) Say: We are going to have these snacks for later. (Put the boxes to the side.)

These games are free, however they can only to be used for classroom and personal use. They may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Be the first one to Emmaus and back to Jerusalem and win the game!

Road To Emmaus Game- Review Luke 24:13-35. Draw on the board a chart and have the players throw a suction toy at the board. Where ever it sticks, the team has to follow the directions. The team with the most points wins.

Snacks:

Introduce snack: Do you doubt what you eat?

Have various foods for the students to try and blindfolds. Place a paper plate and spoon in front of each student. Have students pair off and one child put on a blindfold. Put one piece of food on each plate and have the student feed his partner that is blindfolded the food with a spoon. Have the students guess what they are eating. Discuss. Try other foods. Have the other student feed his partner various foods that have not been done. Discuss.

When “It” says "STOP!", the child holding the fire hides it (under their leg, up their sleeve, etc.). The child who is “It” guesses who has the fire. The child who had the fire is now “It”.
