Plan:

Circle Time:

God Made the World- The Humongous Book of Preschool Ideas by Group Publishing, page 7 - 9. Read story for day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7. Use Creation Word Wall cards to help the children remember what happened for day one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven.

Questions:

1. What did God make the first day? Light
2. What did God make the second day? Sky
3. What did God make the third day? Seas, land, and plants.
4. What did God make the fourth day? Sun, moon, and stars.
5. What did God make the fifth day? Creatures in seas and sky.
6. What did God make the sixth day? Animals on land and man.
7. What did God do on the seventh day? God rested.

Introduce lesson: What did God do on the seventh day? He rested.

What are we supposed to do on the seventh day? Go to Mass.

Discussion:

We act differently in different places. How would you go into a park? (Skip and run). How would you walk if you were going through a store with your mother or father. (Slowly). How should you walk in church? How do you behave? What do we do when we come into the church? (Have students tell you exactly what you should do from start to the end of Mass: Sign of the Cross after you dip your finger into the stoup, genuflect before you sit down at the pew, stand up when your parents do, kneel when your parents do, cross your arms over yourself when you go up during Communion to receive a blessing, etc.).

Church or Mass Basketball

Need: Trashcan and 2 balled up pieces of paper for balls.

Directions: Put a trashcan against a wall. Have students line up in two teams behind a chair (to keep them from getting too close to basket). Students then play Horse Basketball, but spell Church or Mass. The first team that spells CHURCH or MASS wins.

What ever happened to good manners in church?- Find out if you know how to behave in church. Roll the die and move that many spaces. Follow the directions on the space you land on. If the space has a Roll Play activity on it, perform it to the best of your ability. If needed, the teacher will help you understand what to do and coach you how to do it correctly. If the space has a picture of person reacting to bad behavior that they had just seen in church, draw a Game Card and read it out loud (if the student cannot read, the teacher or someone can read it for them). Answer the question to the best of your ability (the teacher can coach the student if necessary).

Snacks:

Introduce snack: What do we see inside the church (hold up a crucifix)? Where is it in the church? What does this crucifix mean? Jesus died on a cross for our sins.

Games

Tithing- A simple game to help reinforce tithing to young children. Each player is given 5 tokens (play money, poker chips, milk caps, etc.) to represent their tithing (money that they have put aside to give to the Church). Put one small basket on the table to put the donations in. Players take turns rolling the die and moving their marker along the board. When a player lands on a space that has a basket on it, they pick up a Game Card and read it out loud (if they cannot read it, someone else can read it for them). On each Game Card is what the Church will use the money for that you donate (to help pay for the Church expenses and contributions for the community and around the world). The player then puts their donation (1 token) into the basket and their turn is over. The first player to donate all their tithing money wins.

Christianopoloy- The object of the game is to learn the responsibility of good financial stewardship; making the right decisions about the money we have and managing it wisely. This includes being able to pay necessary bills at home, putting aside for the things you want, and taking care of your family. Not only do you have bills to pay, mortgages, insurance, etc. you must pay taxes, make donations and do tithing as well.

Tithing: How much do you tithe?- Players move around the board while figuring out how much they should tithe. If you land on the piggy bank that is hungry, you did not put God first and spent all your money. You did not leave any money to do tithing and therefore lose your next turn. If you land on Tightwad, all other players say out loud “TIGHTWAD!” because you refuse to give any money so you must change places with the player that is closest to START. Players roll the die and continue to move around the board. The first player to FINISH wins.

Starry, Starry Night

Need:
16 oz. soda bottle with twist on cap (clean and label removed)
Star shaped sequins or confetti
Silver glitter
Funnel
Blue food coloring
Water
Corn syrup

Place the funnel into the bottle. Fill bottle about half way up with corn syrup. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the corn syrup. Fill bottle with water leaving a couple of inches for air at the top. Put on twist on cap and shake bottle to mix the food coloring. Reopen and drop some star shaped sequins or confetti and some glitter into bottle. Pour a little glue into the cap and screw on top of bottle. Let glue dry so lid cannot be removed.

Day 4 Poster

Have the children cut out a white moon (a quarter moon works best), yellow sun, and stars (tin foil or stickers) and glue them on black construction paper. (You can have the shapes drawn out before class so the children can cut them out.) Or you can give each child a piece of construction paper. Have the children draw a sun with a yellow crayon and color inside of it. Then have the children draw a quarter moon and stars with a white crayon filling each shape with white. The children will then paint over the picture with black water color (the wax in the crayons will repel the black paint and allow the drawings to show through).

Introductory Letter To Parents

It is a great idea to take the opportunity to introduce yourself by welcoming the child and the parents in a letter the first day of CCD/Sunday School. It provides the parents with information of what is expected in the classroom and what the children will be doing during the year. It can also inform parents of the expectations and rules of the class that will help in making the classroom productive, creative, and enjoyable year for all (this can be a separate page that parents must sign and return to you). Teachers can also ask if parents are interested in volunteering and for any information that can help aid them in better understanding their child and their needs.

Here is my letter to parents:

Dear Parents,

Welcome to 1st Grade CCD! I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you and to welcome your child to my class. This is my 16th year teaching first grade CCD at __________ and it is going to be a fun filled and educational year that your child will enjoy and want to participate in.

During the year, your child will study the parts of the Mass. They will learn the roles of the priest, the other liturgical ministers, and the community as well as the responses of all the other rituals and actions that take place during the liturgy. They will also learn some of the items used at Mass and how to behave properly during Mass.

Each week your child will study various Bible stories from Creation to Pentecost. The program also consists of the Catholic beliefs, sacred tradition, and most importantly, your child’s faith and how it relates to their life. Every Sunday your child will be given a Take Home Sheet for you to go over with them to help reinforce what they have just learned. Please help your child fill this out and bring back to class the following week. Students that complete their homework and bring it back to class will be able to play Homeworkopoly. Homeworkopoly is a board game and it is a fun way to encourage students to do their homework and turn it in on time. If the student does not have their homework finished, they do not get their chance to roll the dice and move for the day. Throughout the year, week by week we keep the game going. By starting at the beginning of the year everyone gets into it and by the end of the year everyone is doing their homework regularly. Your child will also make mini story books and/or story wheels in class. Please have your child read to you (or you read to them) the mini book and/or story wheel for homework.

First grade students will be given 5 prayers (Sign of the Cross, Grace Before Meals, Glory Be, Hail Mary, and Our Father) to do by May 2014. Each prayer the student completes, they will be able to pick a prize from the prize bag. We will also have 4 take home tests during the year. Parents will need to help their child study, fill out the test, and return it to class. Students that bring back their completed test will be able to play Homeworkopoly. Attendance in class is needed to fully understand and do well on all tests.

Throughout the year, we will be doing crafts, games, and activities to emphasize Bible stories and the Catholic Church. These activities make the Bible stories and aspects of the Catholic Church more concrete and easier for the students to understand and also a lot of fun.

Again welcome! Please feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns you may have. Any information that you can provide that can help aid me in better understanding your child and their needs is greatly appreciated. My classroom door is always open or you can leave a message with the DRE to which I will respond to as soon as possible.

*Feel free to come and join our classroom at any time. We love to have visitors and help of any kind.

Sincerely,

Name

P.S. If you want to see what we are doing in our class during the year, check out my blog The Catholic Toolbox and click on “My Classroom” page under the header.

Throw Away Your Sins Game- This is for younger students to understand that their sins are forgiven.

Need: 1 trashcan, a piece of paper for each child, and 1 chair.

Directions: Give each child a piece of paper. Have the children think of a recent time that they sinned, such as telling a lie about their homework, arguing with their parents, or a time they were disobedient, etc. Next, have them think of how many times they sinned during the past week. Remind them of all the things that may be considered a sin, and have them write the number down on the piece of paper. Tell the children, “Let’s pretend that you made your confession to the priest and you did your penance. Now your sins are forgiven. Let’s throw away your sins.”

Put a trashcan against a wall. Have the children line up behind a chair (to keep them from getting too close to the basket). One by one, have them throw their sins into a trashcan that is a few feet away.
