Lesson Plan- (Pre K - K): Woman at the Well




The Woman at the Well

Objectives: The children will
- retell the story of “The Woman at the Well”
- discuss how others can be mean to someone because they are different
- name ways of how they can be kind to people who are different
- identify who promised to send a savior one day
- identify who the savior is

Introduce story: Is it hard to be kind to someone that is different from you? (Discuss) Has anyone ever been mean to you because you were in some way different? (Discuss) How did it feel when they were mean to you? (Discuss) What kind of things can you do to make people who are different feel good? (Discuss)

Say: You have some great ideas on how to be kind. We can be kind to everyone, even people who are different because God is kind.


Read story: “The Woman at the Well” from your own story book.


Then ask questions from below.

1. Jesus was tired and thirsty. Where did Jesus rest while his helpers went to buy food? (At a well.)

2. Who came from the town of Samaria to get water from the well? (A woman.)

3. What did Jesus want the woman to do for him? (Get him a drink of water.)

4. Why was she surprised when he asked her for a drink of water? (People were not friendly to anyone from Samaria.)

5. What did Jesus say to the woman if anyone drank that water at the well? (That they will be thirsty again.)

6. What would happen if someone drank the water that Jesus gave them? (They will never thirst and they would be new inside.)

7. Did Jesus know everything that she had ever done in her life? (Yes)

8. Who promised to send a savior one day? (God)

9. Who is this savior? (Jesus)

10. The woman left her water jar and what did she do? (She went into town and told the people what happened.)

11. Did the people from Samaria come to see Jesus at the well? (Yes)

Same and Different

Say: We are all alike in some ways and different in some ways. Let’s find some ways that we are alike. (When you ask these questions be sure that they do not exclude one child so they will feel like the odd one out. Ask questions so that a group of children can participate in each question.

Example: Who is wearing a dress? Who has brown eyes? Who is wearing tennis shoes? Etc.

Say: There are some things about us that are different and some things that are the same. If we were all exactly the same there would be no way to tell us apart.

Bucket Brigade- As kids work together to move water, they’ll discover God wants to share his living water with everyone. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry, page 92 & 93.)

Divide your students into two equal groups. Provide the first student in each group with a small drinking cup. Position a bucket of water per group at the start line and an empty bucket at the finish line. The group that transfers the most water from the first bucket to the second, after giving each group member a chance, is the winner.

Introduce games: How did Jesus treat others that he met? Jesus was always kind and helpful to the people he met. Jesus showed his love by caring for those who needed his healing touch. The next time you want to let someone know how much you care for them, remember that we show others we care, not just by sending flowers and gifts, but by showing acts of kindness each and every day -- just like Jesus did.

Random Acts of Kindness- Children identify Random Acts of Kindness as they move around the board.

The Golden Rule- This game helps promote why someone would use proper manners and etiquette in our daily lives.

Jesus is Our Savior- Jesus is our rescuer and offers us a lifeline when we’re trapped in sin. How can we solve the problems in our life? Jesus is our savior and if we follow him, he will show us the way.



Snacks:

Introduce snack: How can we be kind to others?

Have students wash their hands and make an easy snack for another class. (Make arrangements with the other classroom prior to the lesson so you have permission from that teacher and they know that a snack is being brought to them).

(Example: popcorn, trail mix, cheese whiz on a cracker, etc.)

After they have delivered their treat, they may have some as well.

2. Did Jesus’ mother go with him? (Yes)

3. Did Jesus’ helpers (disciples) go to the wedding? (Yes)

4. What ran out at the wedding? (The wine.)

5. What did Jesus do? (He changed the water into wine.)

6. How many jars of water did Jesus change into wine? (Six)

Turning Water Into Wine- A paper plate craft to show Jesus' first miracle. Start the wheel with the blue showing to represent water flowing from the jug. Slowly turn the back plate to change the blue water to red wine. (Crafts from your favorite Bible Stories by Kathy Ross, page 42 & 43).

The Wedding At Cana File Folder Game- Answer questions about the story and receive a jar token. The first player to collect 6 jars wins. (Younger students do not have to answer a question and can just collect a jar token.)

Have the children make Kool-aid, chocolate milk, lemon aid, etc. using a container that they can see through or look into (cup).

Wedding at Cana Relay Game: The first team that fills the jar full of wine first, wins.

Introduce game: What did Jesus say to the servants?

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.


Need:

6 clear plastic cups
water in 6 large container (bucket will do)
6 empty jars
red food coloring
6 chairs

Divide the class into 6 equal teams and have them line up behind a chair with a bucket of water sitting on it. Across the room have an empty jar with food coloring inside it for each team. At your signal the first person in the team scoops up some water from their bucket and carries it over and pours it in their jar, returns to his line and hands the plastic cup to the second player. The first player then goes to the end of the line. The second player then repeats what the first player did. (Demonstrate what you want the children to do). Play is continued until the jar is full of wine.

Jonah and the Whale

Objectives: The students will be able to
- retell the story Jonah and the Whale
- explain the importance of obedience to God and the need to serve Him each day
- explain that actions have consequences
- identify who never stops loving us
- discuss that everyone makes mistakes and we can be forgiven
- locate Nineveh on a map



Review:

Vocabulary Words: (Write the bold words on the board and discuss with class)

whale- a large marine mammal the breathes through a blowhole on the top of its head
sorry- feeling bad about something you have done
Nineveh- an "exceeding great city", as it is called in the Book of Jonah, was on the eastern bank of the Tigris in ancient Assyria, across the river from the modern-day major city of Mosul, Iraq (show students this on a map and have students find it on a map)

Jonah Questions:

1. What did God want Jonah to do? (He told Jonah to go to a city called Nineveh and tell the people who lived there about Him.)

2. Why didn’t Jonah want to go to Nineveh? (Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh because the people who lived there did not obey God.)

3. What did Jonah do? (Ran away and got on a ship.)

4. What happened when Jonah was on the ship? (A big storm started.)

5. What did the sailors do when the storm came up? (Everyone on the ship was scared that they were going to die and prayed to their gods for help.)

6. Where was Jonah when the storm came up? (He was fast asleep on the bottom of the ship.)

7. What did Jonah say when the sailors asked him to start praying? (I can’t pray to God. I’m running away from Him.)

8. What happened when Jonah was thrown over board? (The storm stopped.)

9. How many days was Jonah inside the fish? (Three days.)

10. Where did the whale spit Jonah out? (On dry land.)

11. What did Jonah do after the fish spit him out? (Went to Nineveh.)

12. What did he tell the people of Nineveh? (He told the people there that unless they told God they were sorry for being bad and began to do the right things, God would destroy their city in forty days.)

13. Did the people of Nineveh listen to Jonah? (Yes)

14. What did the king order the people to do? (To be sorry for their badness and pray to God.)

15. Was Jonah happy about that? (No, he wanted God to destroy Nineveh.)

16. Can anyone run away from God? (No)

17. Why? (Because God is everywhere.)

18. What does God want us to do when we do something wrong? (Say we are sorry and ask for forgiveness.)

19. What does God do when we are sorry and ask for forgiveness? (He forgives us.)



Snacks:

Introduce snack: What swallowed Jonah? A whale.

Make Jell-O Jigglers of fish/whale shapes and put a gummy shape person inside.

Lesson Plan- Samson (1st grade on up)



Samson


Objectives: The students will be able to
- retell the story of Samson
- identify Philistia, Israel, and Gaza on a map
- explain that Samson’s strength did not come from within himself, but from God
- identify who you can ask to help you in making the right decisions



Review:

Blind- not able to see
Feast- a large meal to celebrate something
Philistines- they were people who hated the Israelites. They wanted to take their land and make the Israelites their slaves. The Philistines were from Philistia (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map)
Israelites- people from Israel that are also called Hebrews (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map)
Gaza- seaport and important city in biblical times (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map)

Print and play with your Samson cards. Lay out the cards face down and have the youngsters take turns to look for pairs. If using before the story then have the children hold up each card as the person/symbol is mentioned in the story. If using after the story, when a pair is found, have the child say how the character / symbol appeared in the story.


Really Big Book of bible Games by Gospel Light

On Guard (page 166)- Samson made some bad choices when he was tempted. God’s Words tells us to be on our guard so that we won’t make bad choices in tempting situations. We can ask God for self-control to help us always make the best choice. Let’s practice being on our guard in this game.

Strong Obstacles (page 175)- Samson kept doing things that made it hard for him to follow the instructions God had given him. His wrong actions were obstacles- things that kept him from obeying God. We’re going to play a game where we form an obstacle course with our bodies.


Introduce game: What did Philistines do to Samson when they captured him? How do you think it is being blind? Discuss.

Samson, A Mighty Man

Need: Blindfold or paper bag that can fit over student’s head.

Directions: Student must guess whose face he is touching while blindfolded. Teacher might have to do hand-over-hand to keep the touching just on the head and face.

Samson (file folder game)- Answer questions about Samson as you work your way around the board. Try to be the first player to remove all of your pillar while other players attempt to add to it.




Introduce game: Samson did not always choose the right thing to do. Can you choose the right thing to do and not give into pressures around you? Who can you ask to help you in making the right decisions?

WWJD (file folder game)- Making the right decisions in life is hard to do, but if you let Jesus be your guide and think, “What Would Jesus Do?” it will make it a lot easier.



Introduce game: Why do problems come into our life? People face problems every day. Some are harder than others. There are many choices that the person can have to solve his/her problem, but which one is the best? Samson did not always choose the right thing to do. Who can you ask to help you in making the right decisions? What would Jesus want us to do?

This Samson worksheet is a good way of recapping on the story. It’s a very full worksheet that looks beyond the Delilah story to encompass the whole 4 chapters of Judges. Starting with the Nazirite promise and ending with giving Samson a new hairstyle the children are encouraged to look up, sketch, solve and ponder their way through the story. This worksheet is best done in a group and one activity is discussion based, though it would be easily completed as an independent activity with a small amount of adult input.

Lesson Plan- (Pre K - K): Birth of Jesus





Birth of Jesus (You can break this lesson down into 4 to cover the Birth of Jesus, The Shepherds, The Escape to Egypt, and the Wise Men.)


Objectives: The children will be able to
- retell the story of Jesus’ birth
- identify that Jesus was born in a stable and on Christmas

Circle Time:

Read story: “A Baby In A Basket” (Snip and Tell Bible Stories by Karyn Henley, page 22 & 24) and do cut outs as the story unfolds. Or you can use your own Bible story book.

Then ask some of the questions from below:

1. What town was Jesus born in? (Bethlehem)

2. Why did Joseph take Mary to Bethlehem? (To register so they could be taxed.)

3. Where was it that there was no room? (The inn.)

4. Where was Jesus born? (In a stable.)

5. How many Wise Men were there? (3)

6. Who came and brought gifts for Jesus? (The Three Wise Men.)

7. How did the Wise Men find Jesus? (They followed a very bright star.)

8. Why did Joseph take Mary and Jesus to Egypt? (So King Herod could not kill Jesus.)

9. When King Herod died where did Joseph take Mary and Jesus? (To live in Nazareth.)

Cute, easy craft made out of a baby food jar and tissue paper. Tip: Make a mixture of half water and half glue in a paper cup.
