Games:

Mother May I?

Honor Your Parents Game- A simple game for preschool through first grade to have them tell why they love their parents.

Need: 1 sponge

Directions: Cut the sponge into a large heart. Have the students sit in a circle. The teacher turns her back to the students and she says, "Pass, pass, pass." The students then pass the heart to their right around the circle. When the teacher says, "Stop," the child holding the heart has to say a reason why they love their parents.

8 pages of cards

Back Talk (4th Commandment)- The object of this game is for the children to honor their parent’s requests in the proper way. Print out the three sets of cards. One set is what a parent would say to their child (these cards are in red). Another set is a disrespectful response from a child to the parent. Another set of cards is what the child should say to their parent. Shuffle the cards and deal them completely out. Have the players put their cards face up in from of them so that others can see and read their cards and help them if necessary. By taking turns, have one player start with what a parent would say and read it out loud. After they have read the card, they place it in the middle of the table face up. The rest of the players then check their cards to see if they have one that says what a disrespectful child would say to their parent in response in this situation. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the first card. Then the players look at their cards to see if they have what a child should say to their parent. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the second card. Players can also play in teams so they can help each other answer the questions.

Honor Your Father and Mother (4th Commandment)- God says to “Honor your father and mother”. Honoring your father and mother means respecting and obeying them because they are very important people. Place your markers on the "START” space. The players roll a die and follow the directions on the space they land on. When a player lands on the picture of the family, they must state a reason why their parents are important. Example: “I honor my parents because they take care of me.” The first player to “FINISH” wins.

Skit:

Have the students make up a skit and act it out. It can be about honoring your mother and father or not. They can also do alternative endings to their skit where the students did honor their parents.

Recruiting Volunteers To Be Catechists

Generating excitement and volunteers for CCD is rather daunting. Finding people that want to be a catechist is sometimes like finding a needle in a haystack. Each year it becomes harder and harder to find CCD teachers because parishioners do not want to be challenged with such an undertaking. Most feel that they are not qualified to teach and do not have the skills for classroom management. Others believe that they do not have the time nor patience to be a catechist.

So how can you find catechists?

• Have posters and announcements in the church bulletin. For example: Help our children be all they can be. Become a CCD teacher and use your talents God has given you to help teach our faith.

• At the end of Mass during announcements let the congregation know that your church is looking for a few good men and woman to be a volunteer and teach CCD. Ask them if they are looking for ways to make meaningful contributions to your church, to maintain their skills (or learn new skills!) and to interact with others.

• Let the prospective volunteers know that assistance and training will be provided before CCD starts so the catechist will be prepared and be an effective teacher. (By providing assistance and training to all perspective volunteers alleviates any worries that they might have by letting them know that they are not alone and that they will have help.)

• Spread the word that catechists are needed and that it is a rewarding experience.

• Flat out ask people to be a catechist. They are more likely to consider being a catechist if someone asks them face to face and will usually not to turn you down.

• One of the best sources of future volunteers is current volunteers. It is likely that if someone is passionate enough to volunteer their time, they are likely to have at least some friends who share those same passions and interests. Also, a person who is already a catechist should not only have a good understanding of the church’s needs, but also what types of personalities would do well there. In other words, a current volunteer can be the perfect volunteer recruiter… but only if they like the church enough and feel appreciated enough to recommend the job to others. Keep volunteers happy, and be sure to let them know about any available volunteer positions.

• Have a catechist recruitment luncheon. An organized get-together will provide a good way to exchange information about being a catechist and how much their help is appreciated and needed.

Can you think of ways of recruiting volunteers to be catechists?

kidsbirthdaycakes.co- Pin the Tail on the Donkey (free printable game)

Introduce game: What would you bring if you went to Jerusalem? Let’s find out.

Pack Your Bag

Directions: This is a memory game. Have the players seated in a circle. The first player begins by saying, "I’m going to Jerusalem and in my bag I packed ..........." He can say anything he likes, for example an orange, a pair of shoes, a telephone, or a pet dog. The next player in line begins the same way but adds a second object after repeating the first. The third player also begins, “I’m going to Jerusalem and in my bag I packed ..........." He must repeat the first two objects and then add a third. So it goes on, but if a player can’t repeat or mixes up the order of the objects then he is out.

If you haven't got many players, the same children can keep adding more items. The game continues until one player remains or until time is up. Some lists get very long and are remembered for years by the players. A variation is to decide that the objects chosen must start with the letters of the alphabet in order, for example "apple, bat, cake...zebra." This makes it a little easier to remember. (You could also help the player if necessary so everyone can play). Or you can call on a student and ask them to name something that starts with the letter A that they would bring to Jerusalem. Go around the circle and use each letter of the alphabet. Have the students name an object that they would put in their suitcase if they were going to Jerusalem.

Sunday Best (Palm Sunday)- This game will help children learn to honor Jesus as king. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 145-146).

Temple Bowling (Jesus Clears the Temple)- This game will help children discover God wants his house to be a place of worship. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 83). *You can also use empty 2 liter soda bottles.

Introduce game: Who ate with Jesus at the Last Supper? His disciples. Let’s see if there are enough chairs for everyone to sit. (Play Musical Chairs)

Musical Chairs

Line up alternate facing chairs, one less than the number of children playing. (Example: If there are 10 players, place 9 chairs). The players move round the chairs while the music is on. When the music stops they have to sit down on a free chair. The player without a chair is out and let that player be the one to stop the music the next time. Remove one chair each time the music is played. Repeat until you have only 2 players and 1 chair. The one to sit down first on the last chair is the winner.

*Play one of the following review games and use the questions from the Bible story above.

Introduce game: What crowed three times just like Jesus said it would? A rooster.

Pass the Rooster!

Directions- A timer is set for any time the teacher wishes. Have the students sit in a circle. The teacher then gives a student a rooster and asks them a Bible Question. The student must answer the question correctly. If they do not, the student must answer another question until they are correct. When the student is correct, the teacher says, “Pass the rooster!” and the student passes the rooster to the person on their right and that student must answer a Bible Question to be able to pass the rooster. Whoever is holding the rooster with the timer goes off is the rooster.

Introduce game: How well do you know about Holy Week? Let’s find out.

Basketball

Need: one small ball (or two balled up pieces of paper), two chairs, one trashcan.

Directions: Put a trashcan against a wall. Divide the class into two teams. Have students line up in two teams behind a chair (to keep them from getting too close to basket). Ask the first person in Team #1 a question. If they are correct, they get to try to make a basket. If they make a basket, their team gets a point. If they do not get a basket, their team does not receive a point. After the first player has his turn, he then goes to the end of Team #1’s line. It is now Team #2’s turn. The team with the most points wins.

Introduce game: Have you ever experienced a Passover Seder? For many, Seder meals are not a common part of their typical Holy Week traditions. To help you understand what was eaten during this meal, here is a game that reviews the traditional food of the Seder meal.

Materials: empty plastic soda bottle, egg timer, basket, Holy Week Question (above)

Directions: Have the students sit in a circle on the floor. Set the egg timer for a specified time. Choose a player to start the game by spinning the bottle on the floor. Whoever the bottle points to, they have to answer a question. If the player gets the question right, they get the point (you can keep score on the board). If they are wrong, the person who spun the bottle the gets the point. The player that was asked the question then spins the bottle and the game continues until the egg timer goes off. Who ever has the most points, wins. You can play this game individually or as teams.

Do I say God’s name in anger or in a bad way?

Do I use bad language?
Do I make oaths or promises with God’s name that I won’t keep?
Have I used God's name in vain: lightly or carelessly?

Games:

Do You Measure Up? (Jesus Is Love)- Change this game to “God is Love”. A fun low energy level game with complete directions, supply list, what to say, and post game discussion questions. This game will help children realize that God’s love for them is too great to be measured. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 126).

Pin Jesus’ Love in Your Heart (change to Pin God’s Love in Your Heart)- A great classroom or party game to play to lead into a discussion on Jesus and his love. Ideal for young children. (Super Bible Game Book by Linda Standke, page 45).

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted.

Potty Mouth: Using the Lord’s name in vain is like fingernails scrapping down a chalkboard. God hears us when we take his name in vain and it must break his heart when his name is used in such a manner. This game focuses on how we sometimes do not have respect for God and God’s name.

Place your marker on START. Players roll the die and move their marker that many spaces indicated on the die. If you land on the picture of a toilet plunger, things have backed up and you must back up 2 spaces. Land on the toilet paper, you lose a turn. If you land on the picture of the toilet brush the player to your left draws a card and reads it out loud. On each card is a question about the 2nd commandment: Thou shall not use the Lord’s name in vain (Catholic). If you answer the question correctly, you stay where you are. If you are not correct, you must move to the urinal for having a potty mouth. On your next turn you are asked another question and you cannot move off the urinal until you answer a question correctly. If you answer a question correctly, you may resume your position on the game board. If a player lands on a picture of a toilet bowel cleaner, they must change places with the player that is positioned last on the game board. The first player to FINISH wins.

Fill Your Seder Plate Game

Here is a cute game that I found on the internet and I had to share.

Have you ever experienced a Passover Seder? For many, Seder meals are not a common part of their typical Holy Week traditions. To help children understand what was eaten during this meal, here is a game that reviews the traditional food of the Seder meal.

yumpu.com- Fill Your Seder Plate Board Game

Object of the Game: To collect the five objects that go on the Seder plate.

Materials Needed:
1 game board
1 “Fill The Seder Plate” paper per player
1 die
1 pawn per player
crayons or markers

To Play: Give each player one Seder plate paper. Each player selects a pawn and places it on any “START”. The first player rolls the die and moves clockwise the number of spaces indicated. If the player lands on an object and does not have that object, then the player colors that object on the player’s Seder plate paper. When a player has “filled their Seder plate”, he/she is the winner. (Optional: Players may move either clockwise or counter clockwise to make it easier to land on the object they need.)

Games:

I Love God Above All Things: is played with a deck of cards with pictures of various objects on them. The purpose of this game is see if you can "lose" all of your objects (cards) that you have valued over God.

4 pages of cards

Introduction: We are to love God above all things. We cannot value money, power, TV, music, video games, homework, friends or other things before our relationship with God. Can you put God first in your life?

Directions: Four cards are dealt to each player if three to six players are involved. With only two players, five cards are dealt to each. All remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn, ask for a specific card. You must already hold one of these cards. For example: "Charlie, please give me the cell phone." If Charlie has it, he gives it to you and you go again. Otherwise, he says "Go Fish" and you draw from the draw pile. If you happen to draw the card you asked for, you get another turn. If you draw anything else, it is now the next player's turn. When you collect both cards, immediately show the set to the other players and place the cards face up in front of you. When the draw pile runs out, keep playing until all of the cards have been made into sets of two. When the draw pile is exhausted, no one says "Go Fish." If you ask someone for a card she doesn't have, it becomes her turn. The first player who runs out of cards says, “I love God above all things” and is declared the winner.

How do you feel when you share with someone? (Have the children point to a paper plate face and describe how they would feel.)

Say: Sharing sure does make us feel good. It is fun to share!

Then ask questions from below.

1. Who did the people come to see and hear him talk? (Jesus)

2. How many men, women, and children were there? (5,000)

3. What did Jesus do to the people who were ill? (Healed them.)

5. Jesus asked a boy to share his food. What did he have? (He only had 5 loaves and 2 fishes.)

sundayschoolkids.com- Jesus’ Miracle Feeding The 5,000
Children, from pre-school up through about 5th grade have very little actual concept of what 5,000 of anything really is. They may know a million is a very big number, but most likely never saw a million of anything. They may have seen, but not known by count, 5,000 of anything. The concept of feeding 5,000 men (plus women and children) with 2 small fish and 5 loaves of bread may impact adult imagination, but the magnitude of the miracle may not as easily be grasped by children. This step-by-step activity will help understand how great the miracle of feeding of the 5,000 men (plus women and children) was.
