Eighth Commandment Activities

Eighth Commandment: You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor (Catholic)

Do you guard what you say?
Do you lie?
Do you gossip? (Talk about others when they are not around?)
Do you boast and make yourself look better than you are?
Do you try to get others in trouble?
Do you point out other people’s faults unnecessarily?
Do you not tell the whole truth?
Do you say things about people that you wouldn’t want them to know about?
Have I spoken behind someone else's back?
Am I sincere in my dealings with others?
Am I critical, negative or uncharitable in my thoughts of others?
Do I keep secret what should be kept confidential?
Have I said or written anything that gives an unjustly unfavorable impression of another?
Have I maliciously uttered or given a false report in order to injure the reputation of a person?
Have I defended a false accusation?
Have I condemned the innocent?
Have I reported for truth what is merely doubtful?

In this activity, the children will make writing appear with water and crayons to show that even when we try to cover up our lies, God sees through it all.

Preparation: Mix a drop of blue food coloring and the cup of water in a resealable plastic bag.

Say: Mandy had a problem. She had borrowed her sister's china animals for Show and Tell without asking anyone. On the way home, Mandy dropped the bag of animals. Every miniature animal was shattered. Mandy swept all the broken pieces back into the bag and hid it under her bed before her sister got home. When her mom asked her what she used for Show and Tell, Mandy told her mom that she showed the class her seashells.

Ask: What did Mandy say that she brought to class?

Write "seashells" in orange on the paper. Have each child scribble over the word "seashells" with the blue crayon. Tell children that the blue marks they make are like the lies Mandy told to cover up what she had done. While each child is scribbling, ask him or her why Mandy lied. After each child has had a turn, say: "Mandy took her sister's animals and broke them. Then she lied to cover up her mistake. We often lie to hide another sin, just as the word "seashells" is hiding under the marks you made. But God has very special eyes. He can see right through our lies.

Take the bag of blue water, and lay it over the paper. Let the kids see the words pop out. Read Genesis 18:15 and ask:

Why did Sarah lie?
How is that like Mandy's problem?
How are the marks we made with blue crayons like Mandy's lie?
What can you do if you are afraid to tell the truth?

Say: Mandy lied about the animals because she was afraid of the consequences from breaking them. "Consequences" means what happens to you for doing something. Mandy will have to suffer the consequences of breaking the animals and now also for lying. If you lie, you need to be truthful as soon as possible. God can see through all our lies anyway! Most people will be happy to forgive you. It's always best to tell the truth.

englishcurrent.com- Two Truths and a Lie Game

Liar, liar pants on fire!- Here is a fun game that helps children to recognize what lying is and how to resist it.

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

Seventh Commandment: You Shall Not Steal (Catholic)

Do you respect property?
Do you steal – even small things? Or big things?
Do you vandalize or break other people’s property? For example, write on other people’s books?
Do you vandalize public property?
Do you borrow things and purposely not return them?
Have you kept others from having what they deserve?
Have I retained what I know belongs to another?
Have I cheated or defrauded others?
Have I made unjust bargains or contracts?
Have I refused or neglected to pay any debts?
Have I willfully delayed payment?
Have I neglected my duties or been slothful in my work?
Do I not use the things I have wisely?
Do I fail to treat my things with respect?
Have I stolen what is not mine?
Have I returned or made restitution for what I have stolen?
Do I waste time at work, school or at home?
Do I gamble excessively, thereby denying my family of their needs?
Do I pay my debts promptly?
Do I seek to share what I have with the poor?

What’s Missing?

Need: Several common small objects

Directions: Place several small objects on a tray or table in front of the students where they all can see (number of objects that are age appropriate). Have the students name each object as you point to them. Students hide their eyes while the teacher removes one object. Then the students look and guess which object is missing. Who ever guesses right gets to remove an object and have everyone guess "What's Missing".

Thief!: Players are given situations and they must identify whether or not they are breaking the 7th Commandment. They also must state what they are obliged to do for their sin.

Introduction: Stealing is taking something that does not belong to you without asking. It is not borrowing, or finding something, or owning something, or having something with permission. It is taking something from someone else. Besides stealing, the seventh commandment forbids cheating, keeping things that are not ours, and accepting bribes by public officials.

We are commanded by the seventh commandment to respect what belongs to others, to live up to our business agreements, to pay our just debts and to not charge an exorbitant rate of interest when lending to another. We must also use the things we have wisely and treat our things with respect. In addition, this commandment includes that we do not keep others from having what they deserve or borrow things and not returning them.

Angel Shut the Lion’s Mouth-
Items Needed: (Optional): stickers or prizes.
How To Play: Have children all stand up. The assistant plays the part of the angel. The teacher plays the part of Daniel. The teacher tells the children they are the lions in the den that Daniel was thrown into. Show them how to make claws and move around and roar like lions. They cannot stand in one place, but have to be moving. When the angel says, "Stop", the lions have to stop making noise and freeze in place, because the angel had the power to shut the lions' mouth. If they get off balance and move, or make noise, they have to sit down. Repeat the game several times until the children are sitting. Everybody gets stickers or prizes at the end.

Games:

Introduce game: How were lepers treated during Biblical times?

jesuswalk.com- The Jesus Walk Bible Studies Series

Leprosy in Biblical times was a terrible thing. We're not exactly sure what Biblical leprosy was. While it may have described what is known today as "Hansen's Disease," the word probably included other skin diseases, as well. Whatever it was, once a person caught it, it was considered incurable, and those diagnosed with leprosy were banned from society.

"The person with such an infectious disease must wear torn clothes, let his hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of his face and cry out, 'Unclean! Unclean!' As long as he has the infection he remains unclean. He must live alone; he must live outside the camp" (Leviticus 13:45-46).

While early Israelites didn't operate on the Germ Theory of disease, they understood something about infectious diseases, and those suspected of leprosy were kept isolated until their diagnosis was confirmed (Leviticus 13:5). But the loathing directed at lepers was not merely fear of a disease. Leprosy made a person ritually unclean. To touch a leper defiled a Jew almost as much as touching a dead person. In a sense, leprosy was a sign of God's disfavor.

Later Jewish practice prescribed that while lepers might attend synagogue, they must be the first to enter and last to leave, and must stay in a special compartment to isolate them from the other worshippers. No less than a distance of four cubits (six feet) must be kept from a leper.

To the rabbis, the cure of a leper was as difficult as raising a person from the dead. In all Biblical history only two people had been cured of leprosy -- Miriam, who had leprosy for seven days as a punishment for speaking against Moses' leadership (Numbers 12:9-15), and Naaman, general of the army of Aram, an heathen from Damascus (2 Kings 5). When he obeyed Elijah's instruction to wash seven times in the Jordan River he was healed. Healing a leper had not been done in Israel for seven hundred years, and was thought to be an earmark of the Messianic Age (Luke 7:22), when leprosy would no longer afflict people.

*Scroll down to Lazarus Come Out Game- (just change it to Leper Come Out Game.) Explain to the students that no one wanted to be around lepers and that lepers had to hide from others. Jesus wants us to be kind to everyone so we have to find the leper to help him. Hide the leper under one of the cups, mix them up, and have each student try to find the leper. You can also have each student make their own leper out of a clothespin and give them 3 cups to play the game with each other or at home.

Through a drawing race, kids will discover Jesus' power to heal ten lepers and will think of things for which they can thank Jesus. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children's Ministry by Group Publishing, pages 122 & 123).

Praise Phrases- When Jesus healed and sent away 10 lepers, only one came back and praised God for His gift of healing. God’s gifts to us bring us joy and cause our thankfulness to overflow. Let’s play a game to give God thanks and praise for all His good gifts. (The Really Big Book of Bible Games, page 187.)

All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Who Gave Thanks To God: (card game) Are you thankful to God? Here is a fun game about Biblical characters that are thankful to God.

The object of the game is to match more pairs of cards than the opposing player(s). On each turn, the player will turn over two cards (one at a time) and will read them out loud (or someone else can read the cards for them). The player keeps them if they match (the question card is answered correctly by matching it with the proper picture card). The cards are color coded to avoid confusion of which pair of cards match (each matching pair shares the same text box color). If the player successfully match a pair of cards, that player also gets to take another turn. When a player turns over two cards that do not go together, those cards are turned face down again where they were found and it becomes the next player’s turn.

The Lepers File Folder Game: The objective is to return to Jesus first to thank him. Place your markers on the START square. The player rolls the die and moves that number on the board. The player then follows the directions on the square they landed on. If they land on a ? space, the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud. (If they cannot read, the teacher or someone else can read it for them). On each card is a question about The Lepers. If they answer correctly, they stay where they are. If they are not correct, they go back to where they were. The first player to the picture of the man thanking Jesus wins. The players do not have to get the exact number to land on the picture. Continue playing to find out who comes in second, third, fourth, etc. place.

Snacks:

Directions: Place several small objects on a tray or table in front of the students where they all can see (number of objects that are age appropriate). Have the students name each object as you point to them. Students hide their eyes while the teacher removes one object. Then the students look and guess which object is missing. Who ever guesses right gets to remove an object and have everyone guess "What's Missing?".

The game below is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Thief!: Players are given situations and they must identify whether or not they are breaking the 7th Commandment (Catholic). They also must state what they are obliged to do for their sin.

Introduction: Stealing is taking something that does not belong to you without asking. It is not borrowing, or finding something, or owning something, or having something with permission. It is taking something from someone else. Besides stealing, the 7th commandment forbids cheating, keeping things that are not ours, and accepting bribes by public officials.

We are commanded by the 7th commandment to respect what belongs to others, to live up to our business agreements, to pay our just debts and to not charge an exorbitant rate of interest when lending to another. We must also use the things we have wisely and treat our things with respect. In addition, this commandment includes that we do not keep others from having what they deserve or borrow things and not returning them.

Snacks:

Introduce snack: This basic recipe is in honor of the cowboy who labeled beans “deceitful”—‘cause they talk behind your back.”

Baked Beans

2 (28 oz.) can of Bush’s Baked Beans with onions
8 pieces of bacon (can omit)
1 box of dark brown sugar

Cut up 8 pieces of bacon in 2 inch strips and fry until crispy. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels. In a pot, combine beans, bacon, and the whole box (yes, the whole box) of brown sugar. Bring to a boil. Turn to low and simmer until beans are really thick. Stir occasionally. I judge it to be done if my wooden spoon can almost stand up in it.

- discuss that Jesus and God forgive us and that we must forgive others too

Review:

Vocabulary Words:

The activity below is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use.

Zacchaeus Word Wall- Word wall templates are large flash card printables that you can hang on the wall to aid children when they are learning or using new vocabulary words.

Plan:

Circle Time:

Read story: “Zacchaeus” from your Bible story book. Or while you are reading the story do cut outs (Snip-And-Tell Bible Stories by Karyn Henley, page 96 – 97.) as the story unfolds.

Then ask questions from below:

What did Zacchaeus do for a living? He was a tax collector.

Why did everyone not like him? He often took extra money and kept it for himself. He was dishonest.

Why could Zacchaeus not see Jesus? Because he was short.

What did he do so he could see Jesus? Climbed a tree.

Jesus taught Zacchaeus that what he did was wrong and to live in God’s way so what did Zacchaeus do? He gave half of his property to the poor and he would give back four times the amount he stole from others.

Songs and/or Finger Plays:

Movie- Veggie Tales: God Wants Me To Forgive Them?!- Larry’s Lagoon (15 min.) and ask questions:

What happened to the boat? Larry smashed it.

How did everyone feel about Larry? They were mad at him.
