A to Z Bible Story Lesson- Letter G

G- The Good Shepherd

Objectives: The children will be able to
- retell the story of The Good Shepherd
- identify who is the Good Shepherd
- explain what to do if they lost something
- identify who they are supposed to follow and do what he says
- discuss when kids their age might do to get “lost” and not follow Jesus

Review:
Prayer and questions from last week’s lesson

Vocabulary Words:

The activity below is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Good Shepherd Word Wall- Word wall templates are large flash card printables that you can hang on the wall to aid children when they are learning or using new vocabulary words.

Plan:

Circle Time:

Introduction to story: Here are questions to open with. Since they might all want to answer at the same time, use the sheep Beanie Baby (or any other toy sheep) to pass around. The child holding the sheep is the only one who can share while holding it. Ask one question – if they answer yes, they can explain further. If they answer no, they then pass it to the next child until a yes answer and explanation.

Have you ever lost something?

Was it something valuable to you or something not worth much?

How hard did you look for it?

Did that depend on how valuable it was to you?

Did you ever find it?

If so, what did you do when you found it? If not, what did you do?

Have you ever been lost? What did it feel like? Did you find your way back, or did someone find you? How did you feel when you were found?

Have you ever helped someone look for something they lost?

Have you ever just stumbled upon something someone else lost?

Was it expensive or not worth much?

What did you do with the item you found?

Read story "The Good Shepherd" from your own story book. Then ask questions from below.

If a shepherd has lost one of his sheep, what should he do? He goes and looks for the lost sheep.

Who is the Good Shepherd? Jesus

Need: Nothing

Herding Sheep Game

Need: Balloons and a staff

Pick one student and have them stand beside you in front of the class. Place an empty box on its side at the opposite end of the room.

Say: Let's practice being shepherds. First we need some sheep. Let's pretend these are sheep. (Put 1 balloon on the floor in front of the student). Here is your shepherd's staff (hand student a staff). Take your staff and herd your sheep into the pen (the empty box turned on its side). Hold your staff pointing down so no one gets poked, and be careful you don't hurt your sheep. Guide it gently – don’t push it from behind, but stand in front of it and coax it along. (Encourage student as they guide their sheep.)

Say: This is not a race, we just want each person to have a turn. When you get your sheep in the pen, pick it up and walk back to me and give me the staff and the sheep.

When each student has had a turn, ask the following questions:

Was it easy to make your sheep go where you wanted them to go?
• Do you think it's easy for shepherds to get sheep to go where the shepherds want them to go? Why or why not?
• It's hard to make balloons go where we want them to go, and it's even harder to take care of sheep because they sometimes run away or get lost.
• Do you remember our story from today?
• Who did it say is our shepherd? (The Lord, Jesus)
• Who are the sheep? (us)

Say: Jesus is our Good Shepherd, so when we follow him, we won't ever get lost.
• What are some things that kids your age might do to get “lost” and not follow Jesus? (not go to CCD or Mass, be unkind to family/friends, disobey parents, etc.)
• Why was the shepherd happy when he found the sheep? Why might he have been angry? Which is the more human reaction?

Say: We are all like sheep. There are so many things in the world that can ‘eat us up' if we get lost and if we don't have a good shepherd watching over us. Jesus is our good shepherd, so we will follow him.
• Do you think that Jesus is happy when we choose to follow him? Why or why not?

Good Shepherd: Sheep Memory Game- Print out 2 copies of the game cards and have the students match the sheep.

The Good Shepherd File Folder Game: The objective of the game is to find the most lost sheep. Place the sheep cards face up on the game board on the big sheep. Set an egg timer for a specified time. Place your markers on "START”. Roll the die and move that many spaces. If you land on a sheep that says “FOUND”, take 1 sheep card from the pile. If you land on a sheep that says “LOST”, return 1 sheep card to the pile. Players must collect as many lost sheep as they can as they move around the board. Note that the board is set up so you can move around it many times. The game is over when the egg timer goes off. Whoever has the most lost sheep, wins.

Ten Commandments Memory Game (Catholic)- Cards are laid out in a grid face down, and players take turns flipping pairs of cards over. On each turn, the player will first turn one card over, then a second. If the two cards match, the player scores one point, the two cards are removed from the game, and the player gets another turn. If they do not match, the cards are turned back over.

The object is to match more pairs of cards than the opposing player. (One point is scored for each matched pair, and the player with the highest score after all cards have been matched wins.) When cards are turned over, it is important to remember where they are for when the matching card is turned up later in the game.

Ten Commandments In Order Game (Catholic)- Mix up cards and place them on a table face up. Students then put the commandments in the proper order lining them up from top to bottom. The first student that can put the commandment cards in the correct order wins. This game can be played individually or in teams.

Ten Commandments File Folder Game (Catholic): The objective of the game is to identify which one of the Ten Commandments the sin broke.

Introduction: What are sins? Breaking God’s law. What are God’s laws? The Ten Commandments. So what are the Ten Commandments? They are laws from God that we must always keep.

Players place their marker on START. The players roll the dice and follow the directions on the space they land on. If they land on a “?”, the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud (only use the questions that are age appropriate for your students). On each card is a question about sins and the player must tell which commandment the sin broke (they may say the commandment number or the commandment). Younger students can say whether or not it is a sin and why. If they answer correctly, they receive 1 token (milk caps, poker chips, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive one. When a player gets to the end of one game board, they keep going on the second game board and continue to FINISH. All players must land on FINISH with the exact number. When the player reaches FINISH they will count their tokens. After all players have made it to FINISH, the player with the most tokens wins.

The evils of jealousy become clear in a nightmare in which a green-eyed monster convinces Sister to prove that she can ride the bike. But look out! Sister--and the bike--are headed for trouble.

The Berenstain Bears Mad, Mad, Mad Toy Craze by Stan and Jan Berenstain- The peace and calm of life in Bear Country is disrupted by the arrival of Beary Bubbies. The cubs will do anything to get their hands on these adorable, collectible little toys. As the fad gathers momentum, the cubs--not to mention Mama and Papa--start to feel the strain as they resort to desperate measures trying to get their paws on as many Beary Bubbies they can. With their usual folk wisdom and keen insight, Stan and Jan have tackled a subject that's near and dear to today's kids and parents alike.

Games:

tdcgames.com- GREED is one of the most addictive dice games ever created. Throw the GREED dice to make winning combinations, but beware! The first time you don't add to your score, all is lost. Challenged to keep throwing the dice for a better score, players must learn to stop before raw greed overtakes them.

Green With Envy: A game that helps children to recognize what coveting is and identify ways of how to keep the 10th Commandment.

Introduction: Coveting means wanting something really bad. It includes jealousy, but also taking things from other people, or ruining them so they can’t have them. We can do this with people—have you ever heard people say, “He’s my friend, he can’t be yours!” Or with property—for example, you might be angry at your brother and don’t want him to have the last cookie, so you eat it or hide it on him. Coveting is a way of being mean. It starts in our thoughts when we judge others. We think about things we can’t have, or that we think others shouldn’t have and then sooner or later, we act on these thoughts.

Eighth Commandment Activities

Eighth Commandment: You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor (Catholic)

Do you guard what you say?
Do you lie?
Do you gossip? (Talk about others when they are not around?)
Do you boast and make yourself look better than you are?
Do you try to get others in trouble?
Do you point out other people’s faults unnecessarily?
Do you not tell the whole truth?
Do you say things about people that you wouldn’t want them to know about?
Have I spoken behind someone else's back?
Am I sincere in my dealings with others?
Am I critical, negative or uncharitable in my thoughts of others?
Do I keep secret what should be kept confidential?
Have I said or written anything that gives an unjustly unfavorable impression of another?
Have I maliciously uttered or given a false report in order to injure the reputation of a person?
Have I defended a false accusation?
Have I condemned the innocent?
Have I reported for truth what is merely doubtful?

In this activity, the children will make writing appear with water and crayons to show that even when we try to cover up our lies, God sees through it all.

Preparation: Mix a drop of blue food coloring and the cup of water in a resealable plastic bag.

Say: Mandy had a problem. She had borrowed her sister's china animals for Show and Tell without asking anyone. On the way home, Mandy dropped the bag of animals. Every miniature animal was shattered. Mandy swept all the broken pieces back into the bag and hid it under her bed before her sister got home. When her mom asked her what she used for Show and Tell, Mandy told her mom that she showed the class her seashells.

Ask: What did Mandy say that she brought to class?

Write "seashells" in orange on the paper. Have each child scribble over the word "seashells" with the blue crayon. Tell children that the blue marks they make are like the lies Mandy told to cover up what she had done. While each child is scribbling, ask him or her why Mandy lied. After each child has had a turn, say: "Mandy took her sister's animals and broke them. Then she lied to cover up her mistake. We often lie to hide another sin, just as the word "seashells" is hiding under the marks you made. But God has very special eyes. He can see right through our lies.

Take the bag of blue water, and lay it over the paper. Let the kids see the words pop out. Read Genesis 18:15 and ask:

Why did Sarah lie?
How is that like Mandy's problem?
How are the marks we made with blue crayons like Mandy's lie?
What can you do if you are afraid to tell the truth?

Say: Mandy lied about the animals because she was afraid of the consequences from breaking them. "Consequences" means what happens to you for doing something. Mandy will have to suffer the consequences of breaking the animals and now also for lying. If you lie, you need to be truthful as soon as possible. God can see through all our lies anyway! Most people will be happy to forgive you. It's always best to tell the truth.

englishcurrent.com- Two Truths and a Lie Game

Liar, liar pants on fire!- Here is a fun game that helps children to recognize what lying is and how to resist it.

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

What’s Missing?

Need: Several common small objects

Directions: Place several small objects on a tray or table in front of the students where they all can see (number of objects that are age appropriate). Have the students name each object as you point to them. Students hide their eyes while the teacher removes one object. Then the students look and guess which object is missing. Who ever guesses right gets to remove an object and have everyone guess "What's Missing".

Thief!: Players are given situations and they must identify whether or not they are breaking the 7th Commandment. They also must state what they are obliged to do for their sin.

Introduction: Stealing is taking something that does not belong to you without asking. It is not borrowing, or finding something, or owning something, or having something with permission. It is taking something from someone else. Besides stealing, the seventh commandment forbids cheating, keeping things that are not ours, and accepting bribes by public officials.

We are commanded by the seventh commandment to respect what belongs to others, to live up to our business agreements, to pay our just debts and to not charge an exorbitant rate of interest when lending to another. We must also use the things we have wisely and treat our things with respect. In addition, this commandment includes that we do not keep others from having what they deserve or borrow things and not returning them.
