Liturgical Objects Used in Mass Handwriting

To help your students to remember the names and how to spell the liturgical objects used in Mass, make some manuscript handwriting sheets.

Lesson Plan- (Pre K - K): Abraham

Abraham (you can break this lesson into several to cover all of Abraham)


Objectives: The children will
- retell the story of Abraham
- identify who always keeps his promises
- state that being obedient makes them happy
- identify Lot as Abraham’s nephew and traveling companion on some of his journeys
- list different things they value and can share with others
- identify Isaac as the son God promised to give Abraham and Sarah.
- list things they must wait for God to “give” them.

Bring a little tent or drape cloth over the table and let the children sit inside.

Read story: “Abraham” from your own story book. Then ask questions from below.


Who was Abraham’s wife? (Sarah)

When we learned about them, were they young? (No)

Did God keep his promise to Abraham and Sarah? (Yes)

Did they trust God? (Yes)

How do you think God felt about them when they obeyed? (Happy)

Do you think Abraham was happy when he obeyed? (Yes)

How can we be like Abraham and listen to God? (Obey our parents and teachers.)


Ask the following questions for discussion:

• How did God feel toward Abraham when he let Lot have the better land?

• How do you think Abraham felt when God told him he was going to take care of him?

• How do you think God feels when we share with others, or let others choose first?

• Name something you would share with others.

Who is one person you can share your toys with this week? (Your brother, your friend, etc.)

Tell me one thing that we might do that would make God sad? (Disobey, not share, etc.)

Can you tell me one person in the Bible who made God happy? (Noah, Abraham)



Who was Abraham’s nephew? (Lot)

Why did Abraham move? (God told him to move, so Abraham obeyed God.)

Who can tell me what it was that Abraham and Sarah wanted very much? (A child.)

What did God promise Abraham? (To give him a son.)

Did Abraham have a son right away? (No)

Who had as many descendants as there were stars in the sky? (Abraham)


Use the following questions to have a follow-up discussion:

• Do you like to wait for things?

• What is something we want right away, but cannot have?

• How can we be like Abraham?

• Name something you had to wait a long time to have.

• Why is it hard to wait for things?

• Is it worth waiting a long time for something you really want?

• How does God feel when we are patient?

Introduce game: What does a shepherd do? What happens if one lamb is missing?

What Lamb Is Missing?

Need: Nothing

Directions: Students sit in a group on the floor. One student is “It” and must turn around and hide their eyes. Another student is picked by the teacher and they go outside of the room. “It” then must guess what lamb is missing. Whoever was the lost lamb is now “It”.



Herding Sheep Game

Need: Balloons and a staff

Pick one student and have them stand beside you in front of the class. Place an empty box on its side at the opposite end of the room.

Say: Let's practice being shepherds. First we need some sheep. Let's pretend these are sheep. (Put 1 balloon on the floor in front of the student). Here is your shepherd's staff (hand student a staff). Take your staff and herd your sheep into the pen (the empty box turned on its side). Hold your staff pointing down so no one gets poked, and be careful you don't hurt your sheep. Guide it gently – don’t push it from behind, but stand in front of it and coax it along. (Encourage student as they guide their sheep.)

Say: This is not a race, we just want each person to have a turn. When you get your sheep in the pen, pick it up and walk back to me and give me the staff and the sheep.

When each student has had a turn, ask the following questions:

Was it easy to make your sheep go where you wanted them to go?

Do you think it's easy for shepherds to get sheep to go where the shepherds want them to go? Why or why not?

It's hard to make balloons go where we want them to go, and it's even harder to take care of sheep because they sometimes run away or get lost.

I’m Sorry: As players move around the game board, they are given fictitious situations in which they have done something wrong. The player must then apologize to the person to his/her left for the situation on their card and they must be specific with their apology. They must say something like, “I’m sorry I took your video game,” instead of “I’m sorry.” The player that they apologized to must then say, “I forgive you.” Teaching children to apologize and to seek forgiveness from family and friends will encourage them to do so with God. The player then must also say what they should do to correct their mistake and/or what consequences should happen to them so they will learn to take responsibility for their actions. If the player apologizes correctly for the situation they receive a token. If a player lands on “Lose 1 Token” they must forfeit one token. The player at the end of the game who has the most tokens wins.












The Prodigal Son (file folder game)- The objective of the game is to get to the father hugging his lost son.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is coming soon so it is time to show your appreciation to the teachers and staff that help teach your child. What should you do? There are many ways to show your appreciation, but here is a way that I found years ago online that I thought needed to be shared:



Simple Teacher Appreciation Gift


Materials:
• Jar with lid
• Candy as explained below


Instructions:
For teacher appreciation week get a jar from the dollar store. Have your child make a card thanking the teachers and staff for all they have done and attach your child’s picture on it. Tape the card to the jar. Each day put a note on the jar lid and different candy inside. (You can also just do this for one day or give it the last day of class.)


Monday- Note: “You're my lifesaver! Thank you for all your hard work! From: _____” (Fill the jar with individual wrapped Life Savers candy.)

Tuesday- Note: “You planted the seeds of knowledge in me. From: _____” (Put individual bags of sunflower seeds in jar.)

Wednesday- Note: “You are worth a fortune! Thank you for all you do! From: _____” (Fill the jar with 100 Grand candy bars.)

Thursday- Note: “Hugs and kisses for everything you do! From: _____” (Fill the jar with Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses candy.)

Friday- Note: “You deserve a Carefree week-end. You are a much appreciated group of teachers and staff! From: _____” (Fill the jar with Carefree gum.)

3. What did the Philistines do to Samson after they captured him? They blinded him.

4. Later, what did the Philistines not notice about Samson? That his hair was growing.

5. Where did they chain Samson during a feast? Between two pillars.

6. What did Samson ask God to do? Give him back his strength.

7. How did Samson rescue the Israelites from their hated rulers, the Philistines? Samson pushed the two pillars over and the whole temple crashed down. Samson, all the Philistine rulers and thousands of people were killed.

Need: Blindfold or paper bag that can fit over student’s head.

Directions: Student must guess whose face he is touching while blindfolded. Teacher might have to do hand-over-hand to keep the touching just on the head and face.

This game will help your students realize that God gives us strength as they play tag and learn about Samson (page 41).

Samson- Answer questions about Samson as you work your way around the board. Try to be the first player to remove all of your pillar while other players attempt to add to it.

Circle Time:

Introduction to story: Say to the students- Jesus saw his disciples many times. The first time was on the road to Emmaus, and later suddenly, Jesus appeared in a locked room with them when they were afraid of the Roman rulers and chief priests. All believed but Thomas who finally believed that it was Jesus when he touched His wounds on His hands and feet. During the next few weeks, Jesus’ disciples and friends saw Him often.

This is the story about the last time that the disciples saw Jesus.

1. Who was God going to send to the disciples? The Holy Spirit.

2. What will the Holy Spirit do for the disciples? He will give them the power to speak bravely about Jesus and all that he has taught them.

4. Jesus has gone to be with God, but one day will Jesus come back? Yes.

5. Should you be sorry for the bad things you have done? Yes.

6. Did Jesus die for us? Yes.

7. Will God always help you and be with you? Yes.

Cute, easy craft made out of a baby food jar and tissue paper. Tip: Make a mixture of half water and half glue in a paper cup.

Tongues of Fire Headbands Craft- Use card stock paper or cardboard to cut out flame shapes. Have the children paint them with water colors or glue red and orange pieces of tissue paper on it to make it look like flames. Use a strip of paper for the headband, fitting it to each child’s head and using a stapler to secure the headband. Attach the flames to the headband using the stapler as well.

Who Has The Fire?

Need: Orange construction paper balled up to be the fire.

Directions: The children sit in a circle close together. The child who is “It” stands away from the circle and hides their eyes while the fire is passed around. When “It” says "STOP!", the child holding the fire hides it (under their leg, up their sleeve, etc.). The child who is “It” guesses who has the fire. The child who had the fire is now “It”.

Before class cut crepe paper into 2 feet lengths. Divide your students into teams and give them each a straw and a piece of crepe paper. Have them use the straw to blow the crepe paper across the room and back. If you don’t want them to get on the floor, have them blow the crepe across a table.

Ascension of the Lord


Objectives: The children will
- retell the story of The Ascension of the Lord
- identify how many days Jesus stayed after the Resurrection
- explain what Jesus wanted the disciples to do after He was gone
- identify where Jesus went and where He is seated



Review:

Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)

Ascension- the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection
Resurrection- the bodily raising of Jesus Christ from the dead on the third day after he died on the cross
Baptize- when you are baptized it frees us from original sin and gives us new life in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit- the third Person of the Trinity who comes to us in Baptism and fills us with God’s life
Mass- our most important means of praying to God. At Mass we listen to God’s word, the Bible. We receive Jesus Christ in the bread and wine that has been blessed.
Bless- to bestow holiness on somebody or something
Gospel- means “Good News” and what good news the good news the gospel reading says



Plan:

Introduction: We celebrate Jesus going to heaven on Ascension Thursday (write it on the board). Ascension is the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection. This day comes 40 days after Easter. On Ascension Thursday we pray, sing, and rejoice with Jesus and all the angels and saints. We call it a holy day and celebrate it be participating in Mass. The gospel reading for that day is about the Ascension of Jesus.

Story: "The Ascension of the Lord" and then ask questions

Crowning of Mary

During the Month of May -- a month both named for and dedicated to Mary -- Catholics have long honored her by placing a crown on her image. The tradition in the United States and many other countries has been for school children to have a "May Crowning" ceremony, with a procession, pretty dresses and a wreath of fresh flowers that one child gets to place on the statue. A song for these festivals, "Bring Flowers of the Fairest", with its refrain "O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May..." has been a familiar favorite for generations.
