I’m Sorry (file folder game)

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on all activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

I’m Sorry: As players move around the game board, they are given fictitious situations in which they have done something wrong. The player must then apologize to the person to his/her left for the situation on their card and they must be specific with their apology. They must say something like, “I’m sorry I took your video game,” instead of “I’m sorry.” The player that they apologized to must then say, “I forgive you.” Teaching children to apologize and to seek forgiveness from family and friends will encourage them to do so with God. The player then must also say what they should do to correct their mistake and/or what consequences should happen to them so they will learn to take responsibility for their actions. If the player apologizes correctly for the situation they receive a token. If a player lands on “Lose 1 Token” they must forfeit one token. The player at the end of the game who has the most tokens wins.

The Emotions Game

A friend wanted an Emotions Game so I came up with one based on this game. I made a Christian version of this board game for CCD/Sunday School and I hope it is useful for younger students.

The Emotions Game:

Introduction: You need to think before you say or do things because you may hurt someone's feelings. Remember what Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39

How can we show that we love God and our neighbor? We should do what God asks of us to show that we love him. How can we love our neighbor? God wants us to help others and to care about them and we should treat others how we would like to be treated.

Review the emotions with your students (happy, angry, bored, ashamed, scared, anxious/nervous, sad, surprised, confused, and embarrassed). Discuss when and how we express each emotion. Example: How does someone look when they are sad? (Discuss. Have the students point to the sad face on the game board and make a sad face.) When can someone be said? (Discuss). What should we do when we see someone sad? (Discuss).

We should be aware of how people feel and help them when needed.

*This game can be used for many different things (introduction wise).
Jesus loves me when I'm . . . sad, happy, etc.
Jesus is with me when I feel . . .
I should pray when I feel . . .

Place your markers at START. Roll the die and move that many spaces. Follow the directions on the space you land on. If the space has LISTEN on it, the teacher will read you a phrase (with matching emotional inflection and facial expression) and you must identify what emotion is depicted. If you land on MAKE A FACE, you must make a face that shows one of the emotions (happy, angry, bored, ashamed, scared, anxious/nervous, sad, surprised, confused, or embarrassed) and the other players will guess what emotion it is. If you land on a THINK space, the teacher will read a situation and you will have to identify how you would feel if that happened to you.

Give the children emotion stickers and/or stamp smiley faces on the back of their hands for trying or doing well.

Continue game as time permits or until the children’s attention wanes.

NOTE: There are also emotion cards with the pictures of the emotions on them that you can use to help discuss things or you can play Memory with them. If the children do not want to say the emotion during the game, they can hold up one of the cards to answer the questions.

In the World, but Not of the World
Introduction to craft: sermons4kids.com

Remove all blue crayons from the container. Have the students draw a picture of themselves using the remaining crayons (be sure to tell the students to press hard with the crayons while coloring). Next discuss how sometimes it is hard to be the person that God wants us to be (Example: What kind of person does God want us to be? How can we be that person? Etc.) Explain that God wants us to remain the person he made us to be. He does not want us to become stained by the world. Tell the students the blue water color represents being stained by what is happening in the world that is trying to change us from the person God wants us to be. Have the students paint over their picture with blue water color paint. (The wax in the crayons repels the water color paint allowing the picture to show through.) Tell the students that we remain the person God made us to be. We remain faithful because we ask Jesus to help us be separate from the world and the person that God’s wants us to be shines through.

Games

Mark 16:15-20

Case of the Missing Person (Jesus Returns to Heaven)- In this game, kids will try to figure out who’s missing from the class. They’ll get an idea of how some people must have felt after Jesus returned to heaven. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 104.) Go to Table of Contents and click on page 104.

Play the game “Telephone” (use an empty cardboard paper towel roll). Start with today’s memory verse, then let the kids think of other Scriptures to pass around the circle. Talk about how we can share God’s Word with others.

Introduce games- Jesus told the disciples that they would be able to proclaim the gospel to every creature in the world. He told them that “they will speak new languages”. Let’s see if you can listen and understand a new language.

bobblesworldesl.com- Handkerchief Race: Make foreign language flash cards (2 of each word). Pass out all the cards to the students who are sitting in a group (or maybe in a circle). The teacher holds a handkerchief up and then calls out a card. The two students who have that card stand up and try to get to the handkerchief first. (You can also just have the students race to a finish line and the first one over the line wins.)

What Does This Word Mean?

Have a list of foreign words and their meanings. Divide the class into teams. Say a word from your list and ask one team what the word means. You can also write the word on the board. If Team #1 is correct, they get a point. If they are not correct, Team #2 may try. If Team #2 is correct they get a point. The team with the highest score wins.

I created a printable that easily makes three pockets to hold ideas for these three marks of Lent. I also brainstormed a list of possible kid-friendly ways they can pray, fast, and give. You (or your kids) could also create your own ideas and write them on small cards or strips of paper. I would suggest that then each child pulls one idea from each pocket each morning and has the goal of completing that sacrifice or prayer by the end of the day. Then, the next morning, they choose three new things. I think this short term focus can help them be successful over the course of the long 40 days, and it also can stretch them in a new way each day, leaving room for the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts.

Introduce craft: What happens to a caterpillar? He changes into a butterfly. What are we supposed to do during Lent? We are to change. We are going to make something to show us how the caterpillar changed into a butterfly to remind us that we are to change during Lent and become more like Jesus.

Caterpillar to Butterfly Craft

enchantedlearning.com- Egg Carton Caterpillar
This is an easy way to make caterpillars using egg cartons, crayons or markers, scissors, and pipe cleaners. You could also have the students decorate the caterpillar by gluing small objects like beads, craft foam, cut out paper shapes, etc. Googly eyes are a nice touch also. I use this craft to emphasize that they are to change during Lent. I then at Easter use a butterfly craft to show how the caterpillar changed and became a butterfly.

Introduce craft/activity: What are alms? Long ago money given to the poor was called alms. We are going to make an Alms Jar to take home to remind us the importance of almsgiving and giving to the poor.

Alms Jar

Need: Jar with lid, sticker with “Alms Jar” printed on it, various things to glue on jar, glue

Directions: Have students decorate alms jar. Have them put sticker “Alms Jar” on the jar when they are finish decorating the jar.

The whole family can enter into the spirit of saving for alms. A glass jar is placed at the center of the table on Ash Wednesday, and all the money each family member saves as a result of self-denial from smoking, eating candy, going to movies or similar activities is put into it. Whatever you are sacrificing during Lent, that money you would of spent goes into the jar. The mother, buying simpler and cheaper foods for Lenten meals, puts the difference into the jar at meal time — so all can see where the cost of the dessert went! The children spend the first weeks of Lent investigating needy causes and charitable organizations and missions. They will have the responsibility of determining who gets the alms-fund. (Print this out and glue on an index card. Attach it or put inside the Alms Jar for the students to bring home for family to read).

catholicculture.org- Lenten Sacrifice Beans
A wonderful way to help younger children remind them to do penance during Lent, lima beans in a jar record each Lenten sacrifice.

Prayer Jar by paperdali.blogspot.com- Instead of just writing down a petition for our Lenten prayer jar, paperdali decided to draw the little petitions. Each strip has a picture and the beginning of a prayer for a child (or adult, actually) to finish. To enjoy, just download the page, cut along the dotted line, put them in a jar, and then put it in an accessible spot. During Lent, a child (or adult) can take out a strip during breakfast and begin the day with a prayer.

Bible Bowl- Students will test their Bible knowledge as they bowl their way to win. Use Lent trivia questions to play this game. (The Super Bible Game Book by Linda Standke, page 121 - 127).

Hangman- (Players try to solve the Lent mystery word). The teacher picks a Lent word that is written on a piece of paper out of a bowl. The teacher then starts the hangman game by writing a blank line for each letter in the word. Teacher then picks someone to guess a letter. (Write on the chalkboard the letters that were guessed that were not in the mystery word). If a letter is guess correctly, it is written in the appropriate blank(s) and that person who guessed correctly gets another turn. They can guess another letter or guess the mystery word. If the person is incorrect, another player gets a turn. Whoever guessed the mystery word gets to pick a Lent word out of the bowl and start the hangman game.

The following activities are free, however they are only to be used for classroom and personal use. They may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on these games are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Journey Through Lent Game- A fun way to review Lent. The objective of the game is to get the most points by answering questions about Lent. Make a die out of a large juice carton and put a ? mark on some (at least 3) of the sides of the die. Set a timer for a specified time. Have a player roll the die on the floor in front of the class. If the die lands on a blank space, they do not answer a question. If the die lands on “?”, they are asked a question by the teacher about Lent. If the player answers correctly, they receive a point (you can use tokens, write it on the board, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive a point. Players must collect as many points as they can. The game is over when the timer goes off. Whoever has the most points, wins. You can play this game individually or in teams. For an added challenge, you can also have “Lose 1 Point” and “Take 1 Point” on one or a couple of the sides of the die. When a player rolls “Lose 1 Point”, they must lose 1 point. If a player rolls “Take 1 Point”, they may take a point from any player they choose.

Journey Through Lent Board Game- Here is a neat and easy way to review Lent using a Lenten Calendar. Just print out a Lenten Calendar (suggestions are posted). You can play this game individually or in teams. The players take turns answering questions correctly to throw the die and move from space to space according to the throw count. The first player to Easter Sunday is the winner.

Lentopoly- is a game that is meant to incorporate the 3 aspects of Lent: prayer, fasting & almsgiving. By doing the charitable acts each day the child “earns” tokens (nails, pennies, beans, etc.). You can have a container full of tokens and each child has their own jar to put their ‘earned’ tokens into each day. On Easter the tokens are replaced with jelly beans or other candy/item of your choice. Parents can play too! If you decide to use money, you should decide what organization will get your money on Easter – your parish, pro-life group, rice bowl, etc.

Stations of the Cross Bingo- Students play regular bingo, but they answer questions about the Stations of the Cross. The teacher asks one student at a time a question about the Stations of the Cross. The student answers the question and the class looks for the word on their bingo card. The first student who gets three in a row (up, down, across, or diagonal) on their bingo card first, wins.

Electing A Pope (file folder game)

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on all activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Electing A Pope is based on the race game Tabula (from boardgamesoftheworld.com) which was played by the Romans and ancient Greeks. It is believed to be the ancestor of backgammon and is derived from an older Roman game called Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum, the game of twelve lines. The Emperor Claudius (45 AD) was very fond of game and had a board attached to his chariot. The Emperor Zeno (circa 450 AD) wrote a book about the game and became famous for a disastrous throw which caused him to go from a strong position to a very weak one.

Electing A Pope: For 2 Players or 2 Teams

The idea is to answer questions about electing a pope so you can move your stones around the board. The goal is to move each stone along the 24-square path from the beginning to the end and remove the stone from the board. If the stone of one player lands on a square occupied by the stone of the opponent, the opponent’s stone is removed from the board and must start again. If a player has two or more pieces on a space the pieces on it cannot be captured. An exact throw is needed to remove a piece from the board. The winner is the player who removes all their stones from the board first.

Need:

15 playing pieces for each player (example: 15 blue and 15 red)
3 dice
Question Cards
Game Board

Set Up: This game can be played with 2 players or 2 teams. Shuffle the deck and place it face down in a small basket near the game board. Put an empty basket nearby for the discards.

Rules:

Electing A Pope is played by two players on a board of 24 spaces which are in Roman numerals. Each player starts the game with 15 playing pieces (they all are a different color than the other player). All pieces enter at square 1 and travel counterclockwise. The game is played with three dice.

The starting player may be decided with the flip of a coin or by rolling the highest number with one die. The opponents make their moves by turns. To make a possible move you must answer a question (the other player draws a card and reads you the question) about electing a pope. If you are correct you may roll the dice and move one or some of your pieces (depending on what you roll). If you do not answer the question correctly, your turn is over.

The players take turns to throw three six-sided dice. The throw can be shared between pieces. For example, a throw of 2, 3, 4 could be used to move one piece by 9, two pieces by 5 and 4 (or 6 and 3 or 7 and 2), or three pieces by 2, 3 and 4. If a player lands on a space occupied by an opponent’s piece the opponent’s piece is removed from the board and must start again. If a player has two or more pieces on a space the pieces on it cannot be captured. An exact throw is needed to remove a piece from the board. A player must use the whole of his throw if possible. Any part of a throw that is unplayable is lost.

The winner is the player who is first to get all his pieces off the board.

Follow Me (file folder game)

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. Follow Me: See how well you know the disciples by playing this game.

Directions: Place your marker on START. Determine who goes first and play moves clockwise. The player to your left draws a card. On most of the cards are questions about the disciples. If you answer the question correctly you get to roll the die and move the number indicated on the die. If you answer the question incorrectly, you stay where you are. If the card says “Go Back 2” etc. you must follow the directions. If you land on the picture of a rooster, you lose your next turn. If you land on a space with a letter on it, the player must name a disciple whose name starts with that letter (Matthew 10:2-4). If the disciple has already been named earlier in the game, the player must identify another disciple starting with that letter. If the player is wrong or names a disciple that has already been specified, the player moves back to where they were. If all the disciples have been identified for that letter, then the list can be restarted. The first player to FINISH wins.
