Mass Review File Folder Game is based on the traditional Reversi board game of strategy for 2 players enjoyed all over the world. Game play typically takes place on an 8 x 8 grid game board. At the start, each player commands 2 pieces each, one player controlling white pieces and the other controlling black. As the game progresses, the 8 x 8 grid game board gradually fills up with additional playing pieces. It is not unusual for all 64 squares on the game board to be occupied by the end of the game.


Mass Review File Folder Game: For 2 Players or 2 Teams

* The idea is to answer questions about Mass so you can trap one or more opponents’ pieces between two of your pieces. Those opponents’ pieces then change color to become your pieces.

* The game ends when both you and your opponent cannot play another piece, or if every square on the board is filled, the game is over. You count up the number of black pieces and the number of white pieces and the winner is the one with the most pieces.

*This game is in accordance with the new Roman Missal that was implemented on November 27, 2011.

Participants & Liturgical Objects Used in Mass Board Game is based on the game Patolli which is an ancient Aztec board game that takes its name from the Aztec word for bean - patolli, meaning fava or kidney bean. The game is played on a curious diagonal cross-shaped board with 6 markers and 5 beans (or sometimes four beans) as dice (these were painted with a white dot on one side). It was played all over MesoAmerica: the Teotihuacanos (the builders of Teotihuacan, ca. 200 B.C. - 650 A.D.) played it as well as the Toltecs (ca. 750 - 1000 A.D.), the inhabitants of Chizen Itza (founded by refugee Toltec nobles, ca. 1100 - 1300 A.D.), the Aztecs (who claimed Toltec descent, 1168 - 1521 A.D.), and all of the people they conquered (practically all of MesoAmerica, including the Zaptotecs and the Mixtecs). The ancient Mayans also played a version of Patolli. Patolli was very much a game of commoners and nobles alike and it was reported by the conquistadors that Montezuma often enjoyed watching his nobles play the game at court (from wikipedia.org).

Need:

5 lima beans with one dot painted on one side (or you can substitute 5 coins, 5 pieces of craft foam, etc.)
6 pawns, beans, etc. for each player

Set Up:

This game can be played individually or in teams. Shuffle the deck and place it face down in a small basket near the game board. Put an empty basket nearby for the discards. Give each player 6 pawns of the same color. Players put their pawns in their colored oval. The players throw the “dice” to decide who starts the game. The player with the highest throw starts.


Rules:

The opponents make their moves by turns. To make a possible move you must answer a question (the player to your left draws a card and reads you the question) about participants and liturgical objects used in Mass. If you are correct you then roll the “dice”. If you do not answer the question correctly, your turn is over.

You start with 6 playing pieces in your colored oval. You must roll a 1 to enter a piece onto the board (you would have to have only one bean with the white mark face up and all the other beans face down which is a score of one). Players enter on the square of their color in the center of the board. Your pieces exit by rolling the exact amount needed to land on your colored square on the leg of the board (right below your starting square). The game ends after the first person gets all 6 of their pieces off the board.

Players move their pieces clockwise. When you roll you must move a piece at all possible.

5 spots you move 10 spaces
4 spots = 4 spaces
3 spots = 3 spaces
2 spots = 2 spaces
1 spot = 1 space
0 spots = no move

If you land on the purple spot at the end of the arms you must roll again, but it is your choice as to which piece you move. You cannot move to another spot that is occupied UNLESS it is one of the 8 color spots near the center of the board. In that case, the piece you land on, even if it’s your own is removed and put back in their starting oval. When you get one piece off the board, all players must give you one of their game pieces. If you roll a zero you put one of your game pieces in a pot that goes to the person who gets all their pieces off the board first. If you land on a brown triangle space (there are 8 on the board), you give each player one of your game pieces. Keep as many pieces on the board as possible to keep your options open. Landing on too many triangles can cause you to lose even if you are the first off the board.

*The ultimate objective is to move all of your game pieces off of the board before your opponent does and to have the largest number of game pieces remaining in your possession.

Game Pieces- Playing pieces can be coins, colored buttons, game pieces from other games, fish rocks for the bottom of aquariums, craft foam cut into shapes, glass rocks for vases, etc. You can paint small objects such as rocks, small plastic tops or caps, etc. You can also buy pawns at game stores.

Mary, Mother of Our Church File Folder Game: The objective of the game is to answer questions about Mary and receive a letter tile and spell Mary. Place your marker anywhere on the board. The player rolls the die and moves their marker that many spaces clockwise. The player follows the directions on the square they landed on. If a player lands on a space that says “?”, the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud. (If they cannot read, the teacher or someone else can read it for them). On each card is a question about Mary. If the player answers correctly, they receive a letter tile. If they are not correct, they do not receive a letter tile. Players must collect letter tiles as they move around the board by answering questions. Note that the board is set up so you can move around it many times. The first player that spells MARY, wins. Players can also play in teams so they can help each other answer the questions.

Our Father Magnet

Need: 8 Popsicle sticks, craft foam pieces, “Our Father” prayer printed on paper (size of print should be about 8 pt.), sticky magnet, index card, glue

Directions: Make popsicle stick picture frame. Glue craft foam pieces on frame to decorate. Let frame dry. While frame is drying, go to next activity, then come back and finish frame. Cut out “Our Father” prayer that is printed on paper and glue to index card. Cut to fit on the back of the frame with “Our Father” prayer showing on the front of the frame. Attach sticky magnet to top of frame on back to make it into a magnet.

Write the Our Father on strips of paper or card stock. Cut out strips and glue strips of the Our Father in the proper order on a piece of construction paper. (For younger students you can do this together as a group activity.) You can also play this as a game by dividing the class into teams and give each team the strips of the Our Father. See which team can put it in the proper order the fastest.

Lord’s Prayer puzzle- All you need is some heavy paper and a copy machine. Copy the puzzle and have the children glue it on some heavy paper and color. Then have the children cut on the lines to make a puzzle. Have the children put the puzzle together to practice the Our Father. Put puzzle pieces in an envelope or ziplock bag. (Catholic version)

Our Father Roll a Prayer Worksheet- Cut out prayer strips. Students roll a die to collect all the pieces to their prayer. The first one to collect all the pieces to the prayer is the winner. Students then glue in the spaces provided the prayer in the correct order.

Liturgy of the Word Sequence Card Game- For 2 to 4 players print out at least 2 copies of each page (for more players print more copies). Shuffle cards and the Dealer deals out 4 cards to each player. Dealer puts cards down in the middle of the table, turns over the top card, and places it beside the deck. From the cards in his hand the Dealer must place the next card in the sequence of the Liturgy of the Word on top of the card facing up. If he does not have the proper card, he must draw a card from the deck. Play moves clockwise. If the deck runs out, play moves to the next player clockwise and game continues. The first player to run out of cards wins.

Sitting Duck! Answer questions about the liturgical year as you make your way around the board. Be careful for the "Sitting Duck!" space or you might have to go all the way back to START.

(You can play this game with 4 people or divide the group into 4 teams.) Place your marker on START. Determine who goes first and play moves clockwise. The player to your left draws a card. On most of the cards are questions about the liturgical year. If you answer the question correctly you get to roll the die and move the number indicated on the die. If you answer the question incorrectly, you stay where you are. If the card says “Go Back 2” etc. you must follow the directions. If you land on the picture of a target, you lose your next turn. If you land on a sitting duck, all players must say out loud “Sitting Duck!” Another player who happens to come by on the game board (they can land on the space or just be passing by on their roll) can BUMP you back to START. The first player to FINISH wins.

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

Do you guard what you say?
Do you lie?
Do you gossip? (Talk about others when they are not around?)
Do you boast and make yourself look better than you are?
Do you try to get others in trouble?
Do you point out other people’s faults unnecessarily?
Do you not tell the whole truth?
Do you say things about people that you wouldn’t want them to know about?





Directions: Put the Game Cards in two small basket and set near the game board. Set an egg timer for a specified time (optional). Place your markers on START. Roll the die and move that many spaces. Follow the directions on the space you land on. If you land on a “Pants On Fire” space, you pick up a corresponding card (light blue card) and read it out loud. On the card is a situation that you must make a choice on how you should answer. Remember that God doesn’t want us to lie or to be deceitful and hopefully you will make the right decision. Answer the question to the best of your ability (the teacher can coach the student if necessary). If you land and on a space with a picture of a person with a long nose, the player to your right picks up a corresponding card (light green card) and reads it out loud. You must answer the question with a “Yes” regardless if it is true or not. The player who read the question must identify whether you told the truth or a lie. If they catch you in a lie, they receive a token.



*As you play the game, take advantage of natural opportunities to highlight behaviors that facilitate or impeded being truthful and being honest. Discuss with the students why someone would be truthful and honest. You could also ask, “What do you think of Kelly’s answer?” or “What else could you say or do?” or “What is the worse thing someone could say or do in this situation?” When appropriate, reinforce a variety of ways to say or do things appropriately.

Continue game as time permits or until the egg timer goes off. The player with the most tokens wins.

Additional Rules: (For older children.) When you land on a space with a picture of a person with a long nose, the player to your right picks up a corresponding card (light green card) and reads it out loud. You must answer the question with a “Yes” regardless if it is true or not. The player who read the card can then ask that person as many questions as he likes in order to help him decide whether the truth is being told or not. Obviously, sometimes they will be telling the truth. Listen carefully how people fabricate stories in an attempt to avoid questions. When the player feels he has heard enough he says “No further questions” and states if you told the truth or a lie.

If they are not correct, they go back to where they were. The first player to the picture of the man thanking Jesus, wins. The players do not have to get the exact number to land on the picture.
