Lesson for Younger Students:

Introduction: Who takes care of you by fixing your meals, helping you dress, and nursing you when you are sick? (Mother)
Who may take the place of your mother in caring for you?

To what large family do you belong? (The Church)
When did you become a member? (At baptism)
Who leads the Church? (The pope)
Who is the pope? (Pope Francis I) (write Pope Francis I on the board)
The Church has a mother too. Do you know who she is? (Mary)

What did Mary say when God wanted her to be the mother of Jesus? (Yes)
Mary’s yes made her the mother of Jesus and of God’s family, the Church.

When did Jesus give us Mary to be our mother? (When he was dying on the cross.)
After Jesus went to heaven, Mary stayed on Earth to take care of the Christian family.

One day Mary went to heaven to live with Jesus. He did something special for his mother. Jesus took Mary bodily to heaven. When we die, our bodies will be buried in a grave. We will rise on the last day. The last day is when Jesus comes back to Earth to judge the living and the dead.

Mary has been holy all her life. So Mary was taken up, body and soul, into heaven. This is called the Assumption (write it on the board).

Mary takes care of us. She prays for us and asks Jesus to bless us. She helps us be like Jesus so that we can live forever with Him.

There are special times when Catholics honor Mary. The month of May is Mary’s month. (Print Mary and May on the board.) The names even look alike.

Mary has special feast days during the year. What do you think we should do on these days? (Try and honor her in a special way.)

How can we honor Mary? (By trying to be like her; by praying to her, by singing songs to her.)

Next Sunday, our church is celebrating the Crowning of Mary (write this on the board). A statue of Mary will be brought into the church and she will be crowned with a wreath of flowers. We call Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth. We will be able to give gifts of flowers to be laid at Mary’s feet during the celebration. Her special shrine with fresh flowers will be kept going all through May. We will pray and sing songs as well. One special and famous song will be sung, “Ave Maria” (write this on the board) which means Hail Mary.

Mary likes us to ask her for help. We should pray to Mary often. What might we pray to her?

Do you know any prayers to Mary? (Hail Mary)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Discussion: It is important for us to honor our mom’s every chance we get. Our government thought it was important enough to give mom’s their own holiday. What day is this? (Mother’s Day)

Should Mother’s Day be the only day we take time out to thank mom though? Why or why not?

Introduce story: Who will always love you? Here is a story about a mother’s love for her son. Read story- “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch

Ask the following questions after reading the story:

1. Did his mother always like his behavior? No.

2. What would she do when he was really asleep? She would pick him up and hold him. She would rock back and forth and sing that she would love him forever as long as she was living.

3. What would she do when he was all grown up? She would drive over to his house and do the same thing when he was really asleep.

4. When she was too old to do that any more, what did her son do? He picked her up and rocked her back and forth. He sang that he would love her forever as long as he was living.

5. What did the son do when he came home after doing that to his mother? He went into his baby daughter’s room when she was sleeping. He picked her up and rocked her back and forth. He then sang the same song that his mother used to sing to him.

6. Who will always love you? Your mother.

Planning Ahead For CCD

Another year of CCD is behind us and now is the time to think about what you will do next year. Preparation is necessary prior to CCD starting and during the summer it is the right time for the catechist to begin. With thorough planning before hand, the catechist will have an easier time and the students will learn to their fullest potential.

Time To Think- Since CCD is over for most it is time to think of what will be needed for the next school year. What will you be doing? What will you need? What worked, what didn’t? Did you learn from your mistakes? These questions and more will inundate the catechist the next few weeks. Before you know it, classes will be starting again and you need to be prepared. This overwhelming task is examined and planning should be done way before so you can be ready and prepared.

CCD Program Parent/Student Handbook- To establish what the responsibilities are for the CCD student and the parent(s) it is a good idea to have a CCD Program Parent/Student Handbook. The handbook can specify the rules and regulations that the students and parent(s) must follow so there will be no misunderstandings. Having a handbook allows the CCD program to run smoothly and without any problems. It can also inform how the CCD program plans to educate your child and answer many questions that the parents might have.

CCD Registration Form- Before a student can attend CCD, the parents must fill out a registration form. The form differs from parish to parish, but most are relatively the same. Posted are what registration forms may consist of as well as some tips and suggestions.

CCD Volunteer Form- Before a person can volunteer to help in the religious education at your parish, they must fill out and sign a Volunteer Form. By having prospective volunteers fill out this form it will let them know what help is needed and what the responsibilities are for that particular job. It can also inform them what is required to be able volunteer at the parish. Tips and suggestions of what can be included in this form are posted.

Catechist Handbook- It is a good idea to have a Catechist Handbook to acquaint volunteer catechists with the policies and procedures in the Religious Formation Program. The Catechist Handbook will clearly define what the responsibilities are for the catechist and the procedures that they are to follow.

Catechist Training- Most dioceses and/or parishes require some kind of catechist training before they can teach a class each year. By providing assistance and training to all catechists before CCD starts it will prepare the catechist so they can be an effective teacher. Certified catechist should also participate in the training because no catechist can know everything and they could also benefit from new ideas and activities. Suggestions of what can be in the catechist training is posted.

CCD Open House- Before CCD starts it is a good idea to have an Open House. The ideas posted should be helpful and allow you to have a great CCD Open House.

Parent Volunteers in Your Classroom- Volunteers in your CCD classroom can be a blessing IF done correctly and IF it is planned ahead. Nothing is worse than having a volunteer not know what to do or be in the way. Here are tips that should be done to have a good volunteer program in your classroom.

Classroom Newsletters- Classroom newsletters are an excellent way to keep in touch with parents and help them be a part of their child's education. Parent’s love to know what is going on in their child’s classroom and frequent and regular class newsletters enable parents to sense the feeling and momentum of the class and gain insight into what their child is learning.

Parent Involvement in CCD- Since parents and guardians are the primary teachers of the Faith their involvement in CCD is vital. Without it the child will not learn to their fullest potential. Tips are posted on how to get parents involved in CCD.

Classroom Assignment Sheets- An organized student stays current on assignments and will achieve success in CCD. Assignment Sheets help students develop sound organization skills that will teach them a successful lifelong journey through school and CCD. Parents and students like having assignments written down so they can keep track of them and a good way of doing it is having a Classroom Assignment Sheet.

What should a catechist do when they are absent?- From time to time a catechist must be absent for various reasons. When this happens a substitute must take over your classroom and be able to teach your students. Here are some tips and suggestions that every catechist should do if they are absent so your class can run smoothly and your students will learn to their fullest potential.

What makes a good catechist?- Tips on how to be a good catechist.

What do students like to do in CCD?- The key to being a good catechist is knowing what your students like to do in CCD. Here are some tips and suggestions for activities to do in the classroom that are age appropriate.

Teacher Tools- A teacher’s time is limited and to be an effective teacher you must be prepared for any situation. Here are some of my favorite free teacher tools that just might come in handy in your classroom.

Self Evaluation: Are you a good teacher?

Are you a good teacher? Are your students learning? These and many other questions inundate a catechist as to whether or not they are doing a good job teaching their students.

To find out whether or not you are a good teacher, researchers say that one of the best ways is to use evaluative questions that force catechists to evaluate themselves. In doing this catechists can assess what they know, do not know, and what they would like to know so they can become better teachers. After they self-evaluate they will be able to set goals that they feel they can attain with the new knowledge they have about themselves.

Here are examples of some questions that a catechist can ask themselves:

1. How much time and effort did you put into this lesson?

2. What do you think your strengths and weaknesses were in this lesson?

3. How could you improve your lesson?

4. What are the most valuable things your students learned from this lesson?

When doing self evaluations the catechist begins to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses. You also become more familiar with your own beliefs, and possibly your misconceptions on what and how you are teaching your class and whether or not it is effective or not. After you self-evaluate yourself, you will be able to set goals that you feel you can attain with the new knowledge you have about yourself.

circle.adventist.org- Sample of a Teacher Performance Evaluation Appraisal

catechistsjourney.loyolapress.com- Catechist Self-Examination

catechesisinthethirdmillennium.wordpress.com- End of the Year Program Evaluations

Some researchers suggest teachers to ask their students and parents for feedback in a questionnaire on how the class is going and what the teacher is doing well and not so well. When doing this the teacher is showing that they want to make improvements where needed and that they are open to ideas. Teachers could put up a suggestion box, and they can hand out evaluation forms at different times of the year. This shows the students and parents that continuous improvement is important and that everyone needs to learn the importance of self evaluation.

Another way to self evaluate is to video tape your lessons. The tapes can be reviewed in private and teachers can build off their strengths and improve upon their points of weaknesses.

Everyone makes mistakes and the difference between an effective catechist and one who is not is the ability to learn from those mistakes. Face your challenges that come your way and use your mistakes as a learning tool and look for ways on how to improve. All catechists make mistakes and good catechists learn from their mistakes. Mistakes do not keep your from being a good teacher, they will propel you toward it -- if you accept them and learn from them!

Special Events for May

*This month’s special events are: Crowning of Mary and The Ascension of the Lord

Crowning of Mary

Crowning of Mary- During the Month of May -- a month both named for and dedicated to Mary -- Catholics have long honored her by placing a crown on her image. Here are some activities to help you celebrate the Crowning of Mary.

The Ascension of the Lord

gardenofpraise.com- Jesus Leaves Earth
On this website, all Ascension activities are interactive and include an Ascension Song, word searches, and a memory puzzle. Students can read the simple Ascension story on this website and produce a short presentation for the class, explaining what happened during the Ascension of Jesus. Level: Grades 3-6

Ascension of the Lord- lesson plan for 1st grade on up with: Objectives, Review, Vocabulary Words, Bible Story with questions, Activities, Crafts, Games, Snacks, Puzzles/Mazes/Worksheets

Birth of Jesus to Ascension Cards- Play Memory, Go Fish, or Sequencing with these cards. The cards can also help students establish the content and order of the Matthew, Mark and Luke (synoptic) gospels. Example: Take the gospel of Mark since it's the shortest and ask the students to take the cards and put them in the order which Mark mentions them in his book.

*If you want to play Bible Timeline Card Game, make sure you print out the action cards and follow the directions.
