The blindfolded student will try to find out who the person is by asking questions to figure out who they are. The unknown student answers the questions using a disguised voice. Once they have identified their fellow class member, that student can be blindfolded and have a turn.
Questions: Was it hard or easy to recognize the person from their voice?
Take a verse from today’s lesson Luke 24:13-35. Make paper footprints with the words of the verse on each footprint. Let the kids put them in order.

About the disciples' recognition
• Why were the disciples unable to recognize Jesus? Luke's Gospel explicitly states that their "eyes were kept from recognizing him" (v. 16). This was not a physical inability but a divine intervention, a temporary spiritual blindness. Jesus wanted them to first understand the events of his passion through the Scriptures before seeing him physically.
• What was significant about the "breaking of the bread" that finally opened their eyes? The actions Jesus performed—taking bread, blessing, breaking, and giving it—echo the Last Supper and were familiar to the disciples. In this moment of intimate table fellowship, their spiritual understanding was completed, allowing them to finally recognize him.
• How does disappointment and grief affect our ability to see God at work? The disciples were "downcast" and full of grief, which clouded their vision and understanding of the events. Their expectations of a conquering Messiah had been crushed by his crucifixion. This story reminds us that personal disappointment can make it difficult to recognize the presence of the risen Christ in our own lives.
About Jesus' interaction
• Why did Jesus let the disciples tell their full story before revealing his identity? By asking a simple question ("What are you discussing?"), Jesus listened to the disciples' grief and confusion. This approach allows the disciples to process their emotions and articulate their dashed hopes, demonstrating the importance of listening and empathy
• Why did Jesus rebuke the disciples for their slow-heartedness? Jesus called them "foolish and slow of heart to believe" (v. 25) for failing to grasp what the prophets foretold about the Messiah's suffering before his glory. The rebuke was not for a lack of intellectual understanding but for their moral reluctance to fully accept God's plan as revealed in Scripture.
• What was the importance of Jesus explaining the Scriptures? Jesus demonstrated that his crucifixion and resurrection were not a deviation from God's plan but the fulfillment of it. He proved that the entire Old Testament story pointed to him, grounding their faith in the Word of God rather than just a personal encounter.
About faith and action
• What does this story teach us about walking with Jesus? The narrative shows that Jesus walks alongside his disciples even when they are straying from him in fear and confusion. He meets them where they are and gently guides them back toward the truth.
• What is the significance of the disciples' immediate return to Jerusalem? After their eyes were opened, the disciples' despair was replaced with joy and urgency. They immediately turned around and ran the seven miles back to Jerusalem to share the good news, demonstrating the transformative power of encountering the risen Christ.
• How does this passage show that Jesus respects our free will? When they reached Emmaus, Jesus "acted as if he were going farther" (v. 28) until they invited him to stay. This illustrates that Jesus waits for an invitation into our lives; he does not force his way in.
