Trust and the promise of a heavenly home (vv. 1–4)
• Why were the disciples troubled, and how did Jesus seek to calm them? Just before this passage, Jesus told his disciples that one of them would betray him, and Peter would deny him. He also indicated that he was leaving them soon. Their distress is understandable. Jesus's remedy for their "troubled heart" was to "Believe in God; believe also in me" (v. 1), presenting faith as the antidote to fear.
• What is the "Father's house with many rooms," and what does Jesus mean by preparing a place for his followers? The "Father's house" is a metaphor for heaven, and "rooms" (or dwelling places) signifies a permanent place with God. Jesus's promise to "prepare a place" for them means his death, resurrection, and ascension will open the way for his followers to have an eternal dwelling with him and the Father.
• What does Jesus's promise to "come again" mean for believers? This promise refers to his return to take believers to be with him, signifying reunion and the hope of eternal life. This promise offers reassurance and perspective in the face of earthly trials.
Jesus as the exclusive way to the Father (vv. 5–7)
• What did Thomas's question in verse 5 reveal about his understanding? Thomas, speaking honestly, thought Jesus was simply going to a physical location. His confusion showed that he and the other disciples still did not fully grasp the spiritual nature of Jesus's journey.
• How does Jesus's statement "I am the way, the truth, and the life" confront modern ideas of religion? In a multi-faith world, this statement is controversial because Jesus claims to be the exclusive path to God ("No one comes to the Father except through me"). For believers, it means that salvation is found only through faith in him and his work, not through other means.
• What is the significance of the phrase "I am the way, the truth, and the life"? This declaration is the sixth of seven "I am" statements in the Gospel of John, affirming Jesus's divine authority.
-The Way: He is not merely a guide but the actual path to God.
-The Truth: He is the embodiment of God's reality and revelation.
-The Life: He is the source of eternal life.
The Father revealed in the Son (vv. 8–12)
• Why did Philip ask Jesus to "show us the Father"? Philip wanted a direct, visible manifestation of God, a theophany similar to those described in the Old Testament.
• How does Jesus's response to Philip clarify his unity with the Father? Jesus's reply, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father," asserts his divinity and inseparability from God. Seeing Jesus's actions and hearing his words was the same as seeing and hearing the Father in human form.
• What does Jesus mean when he says believers will do "greater works" than he did? This promise does not refer to greater quality but to a greater scope of work, made possible by the Holy Spirit after Jesus's ascension. The disciples, empowered by the Spirit, would spread the Gospel to all nations, reaching more people than Jesus did during his earthly ministry.
• What role does "believing" play in this passage? Believing is presented as the foundational solution to a troubled heart and the basis for doing greater works. Jesus offers two reasons to believe: his own words and his miraculous works.
