Special Events for May

*This month’s special events are: Crowning of Mary and The Ascension of the Lord

Crowning of Mary

Crowning of Mary- During the Month of May -- a month both named for and dedicated to Mary -- Catholics have long honored her by placing a crown on her image. Here are some activities to help you celebrate the Crowning of Mary.

The Ascension of the Lord

gardenofpraise.com- Jesus Leaves Earth
On this website, all Ascension activities are interactive and include an Ascension Song, word searches, and a memory puzzle. Students can read the simple Ascension story on this website and produce a short presentation for the class, explaining what happened during the Ascension of Jesus. Level: Grades 3-6

Ascension of the Lord- lesson plan for 1st grade on up with: Objectives, Review, Vocabulary Words, Bible Story with questions, Activities, Crafts, Games, Snacks, Puzzles/Mazes/Worksheets

Birth of Jesus to Ascension Cards- Play Memory, Go Fish, or Sequencing with these cards. The cards can also help students establish the content and order of the Matthew, Mark and Luke (synoptic) gospels. Example: Take the gospel of Mark since it's the shortest and ask the students to take the cards and put them in the order which Mark mentions them in his book.

*If you want to play Bible Timeline Card Game, make sure you print out the action cards and follow the directions.

catechismangel.com- Holy Week File Folder Game (scroll down to this)
For each question, a player must choose the correct day that the Holy Week event occurred. A question must be answered correctly before moving to the next question. Each time a question is answered correctly, an Easter lily is earned. The lily is added to a cross to show the beauty of how Jesus’ death on a cross conquered death and gave us new life. If an answer is wrong, a player gets to try again. The game can be played independently (at home learning), with partners cooperatively, or as a race between teams. This file folder activity has been also been made into an interactive on-line game

The Catholic Toolbox- How To Review Material
Play one of these games to review today’s lesson

Have you ever experienced a Passover Seder? For many, Seder meals are not a common part of their typical Holy Week traditions. To help children understand what was eaten during this meal, here is a game that reviews the traditional food of the Seder meal.

Holy Week Bingo-Make up simple bingo cards using pictures or vocabulary words with Holy Week questions from your lesson. Be sure to make calling cards out of index cards so you can hold up the picture or word so the children can see if they have that on their Bingo card. (You can also just make the spaces on your Bingo cards in the shape of a cross to remind them that Jesus died on the cross for them).

Holy Week Spin the Bottle Game- Play a wacky version of Spin the Bottle by answering questions about Holy Week. Question Cards included.

Holy Week Memory Game- Play Memory, Go Fish, or Sequencing with these cards. Directions for Bible Timeline Game are also posted.

Last Supper File Folder Game- Play individually or in teams and work your way around the game board answering questions about the Last Supper. If you are correct you roll a die and move your marker in your row in any direction you want. If you land on a colored space, you can move one row toward the center with “Last Supper”. Play continues until a team or player reaches “Last Supper”.

Holy Week File Folder Game- The objective of the game is to go through all the days of Holy Week by answering questions about each day. The player spins the spinner and follows the directions. If the player spins “Next Day” they move to the next day. The players must go to each and every day (even if they spin 2 and only need 1, they have to stop at the day). The player cannot pass a day until they answer a question about it. The questions are on a question sheet that is divided into the seven days of Holy Week. The teacher will ask a question from the list about the day that the player landed on. If they are correct, on their next turn they spin the spinner. If the player misses the question, on their next turn they do not spin the spinner, but they must take their turn and answer a question about that day of Holy Week before they can move on. The first person to move around the board and answer questions correctly on all 7 days of Holy Week, wins. Continue playing to find out who comes in second, third, fourth, etc. place.

St. Valentine Game

Introduction to game: What do you know about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day?

Materials- large die, egg timer, questions about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day

Make a die out of a large juice carton girlguides.ca and put a ? mark on some (at least 3) of the sides of the die.

Directions- The objective of the game is to get the most points by answering questions about St. Valentine and St. Valentine’s Day. After studying and discussing this subject, divide the class into teams and have the students come up with questions. Set an egg timer for a specified time. Have a player roll the die on the floor in front of the class. If the die lands on a blank space, they do not answer a question. If the die lands on “?”, they are asked a question by the other player or team. If the player answers correctly, they receive a point (you can use tokens, write it on the board, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive a point. Players must collect as many points as they can. The game is over when the egg timer goes off. Whoever has the most points, wins. You can play this game individually or in teams. For an added challenge, you can also have “Lose 1 Point” and “Take 1 Point” on one or a couple of the sides of the die. When a player rolls “Lose 1 Point”, they must lose 1 point. If a player rolls “Take 1 Point”, they may take a point from any player they choose.

Sacrament of Matrimony (file folder game)- Answer different kinds of questions (multiple choice, True or False, Fill in the Blank, or Puzzles) about the Sacrament of Matrimony as you move around the board.

Introduction to game: For Catholics, the sacrament of marriage is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: The loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values.
