Lesson for Younger Students:

Introduction: Who takes care of you by fixing your meals, helping you dress, and nursing you when you are sick? (Mother)
Who may take the place of your mother in caring for you?

To what large family do you belong? (The Church)
When did you become a member? (At baptism)
Who leads the Church? (The pope)
Who is the pope? (Pope Francis I) (write Pope Francis I on the board)
The Church has a mother too. Do you know who she is? (Mary)

What did Mary say when God wanted her to be the mother of Jesus? (Yes)
Mary’s yes made her the mother of Jesus and of God’s family, the Church.

When did Jesus give us Mary to be our mother? (When he was dying on the cross.)
After Jesus went to heaven, Mary stayed on Earth to take care of the Christian family.

One day Mary went to heaven to live with Jesus. He did something special for his mother. Jesus took Mary bodily to heaven. When we die, our bodies will be buried in a grave. We will rise on the last day. The last day is when Jesus comes back to Earth to judge the living and the dead.

Mary has been holy all her life. So Mary was taken up, body and soul, into heaven. This is called the Assumption (write it on the board).

Mary takes care of us. She prays for us and asks Jesus to bless us. She helps us be like Jesus so that we can live forever with Him.

There are special times when Catholics honor Mary. The month of May is Mary’s month. (Print Mary and May on the board.) The names even look alike.

Mary has special feast days during the year. What do you think we should do on these days? (Try and honor her in a special way.)

How can we honor Mary? (By trying to be like her; by praying to her, by singing songs to her.)

Next Sunday, our church is celebrating the Crowning of Mary (write this on the board). A statue of Mary will be brought into the church and she will be crowned with a wreath of flowers. We call Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth. We will be able to give gifts of flowers to be laid at Mary’s feet during the celebration. Her special shrine with fresh flowers will be kept going all through May. We will pray and sing songs as well. One special and famous song will be sung, “Ave Maria” (write this on the board) which means Hail Mary.

Mary likes us to ask her for help. We should pray to Mary often. What might we pray to her?

Do you know any prayers to Mary? (Hail Mary)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.


Discussion: It is important for us to honor our mom’s every chance we get. Our government thought it was important enough to give mom’s their own holiday. What day is this? (Mother’s Day)

Should Mother’s Day be the only day we take time out to thank mom though? Why or why not?



Introduce story: Who will always love you? Here is a story about a mother’s love for her son. Read story- “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch

Ask the following questions after reading the story:

1. Did his mother always like his behavior? No.

2. What would she do when he was really asleep? She would pick him up and hold him. She would rock back and forth and sing that she would love him forever as long as she was living.

3. What would she do when he was all grown up? She would drive over to his house and do the same thing when he was really asleep.

4. When she was too old to do that any more, what did her son do? He picked her up and rocked her back and forth. He sang that he would love her forever as long as he was living.

5. What did the son do when he came home after doing that to his mother? He went into his baby daughter’s room when she was sleeping. He picked her up and rocked her back and forth. He then sang the same song that his mother used to sing to him.

6. Who will always love you? Your mother.

Crafts:

Introduce craft: Who is the mother of Jesus? Who does your mother love? Mother’s Day is coming soon so we are going to make something special for her.


Heart Picture Fame

Need: Craft foam cut into the shape of a heart with oval cut out of the center for child’s picture, sticky magnets, glue, glitter, items to glue onto frame, colored construction paper, stapler, crayons, magic markers

Directions: Stick sticky magnet on back of heart frame. Have students decorate their frames for their Mom’s. Show students how to make a simple envelope with the colored construction paper and staple. Students can decorate their envelope with crayons and magic markers and put their frame inside as a present for Mom. You can also use paper lunch bags to put present inside that the students decorate. Have students get help from their father or someone from home to find a picture of them to glue to the back of their frame so you can see their picture on the front side.

Introduce art craft: What do we need to make to go with the gift that we are making for our Mom’s? A card.

Honor Your Mother Game

Need: 1 sponge

Directions: Cut the sponge into a large heart. Have the students sit in a circle. The teacher turns her back to the students and she says, "Pass, pass, pass." The students then pass the heart to their right around the circle. When the teacher says, "Stop," the child holding the heart has to say a reason why they love their Mom or whomever is taking care of them.

Morality Lesson Plans for Middle and High School Students

Morality, in addition to raw academics, plays an important role in society. It raises an important question, “Who is responsible for teaching morality?” Is it society’s responsibility, including teachers, to pass on the virtues of civilized life to the next generation? Or is this strictly within parents’ purview to oversee? Who gets to decide which morals get attention and which don’t?

There’s little doubt that including some kind of character or moral education in addition to strict academics positively influences students. The question then is not if we should include discussion and education of morality in schools, but how.

Teach Positive Behaviors. One of the first ways that you, as an educator, bring moral education into your classroom is by directly speaking about positive behaviors. Sometimes we assume that students know the correct, moral thing to do in any given moment. But do not allow this assumption to cause you to overlook the opportunity to make “Teachable moments” out of situations in your classroom. Openly share with students what the “right” thing to do is, and engage them in a discussion that challenges them to evaluate for themselves what seems the most appropriate course of action.

Be a Role Model. It’s not just what you say; it’s what you do that counts. As one of the few adults in the life of a child, it’s important that you use your conduct to model for students what an ethical professional looks like. Make sure that you do the right thing and conduct yourself along the highest moral standards. Judge fairly, practice honesty and respect, share, demonstrate responsibility, and allow students to see how you embody these characteristics in and out of the classroom.

Connect It to Your Content. Sometimes learning certain content is straightforward learning. But look for those opportunities where aspects of your content raise the moral question or connect to character issues. Students enjoy being challenged to think critically about themselves, and connecting ethical discussions to your content both reinforces their content knowledge and their characters.

Talk with Parents. Your students are important to you, but you are not the sole adult interested in your students’ moral development. Share your aspirations of your students’ characters with parents, converse with parents about how students are doing academically and ethically, and always make sure you allow parents to remain in the driver’s seat of their children’s character development.

A Question of Scruples is a card game based on ethical dilemmas. Players are given five yellow cards apiece, each yellow card with a moral dilemma such as, "You accidentally damage a car in a parking lot. Do you leave a note with your name and phone number?" Each player also has a single red card, with either "YES", "NO", or "DEPENDS" printed upon it. The player must ask the question on a yellow card of the person whom the holder of the yellow card believes most likely to reply with the answer on the questioner's red card. The game thus tests how well players know each other. If the answer matches that on the red card, the questioner discards both yellow card and red card, then takes another red card. The game is won by the player who first discards all five of his yellow cards.

I’m Sorry: As players move around the game board, they are given fictitious situations in which they have done something wrong. The player must then apologize to the person to his/her left for the situation on their card and they must be specific with their apology. They must say something like, “I’m sorry I took your video game,” instead of “I’m sorry.” The player that they apologized to must then say, “I forgive you.” Teaching children to apologize and to seek forgiveness from family and friends will encourage them to do so with God. The player then must also say what they should do to correct their mistake and/or what consequences should happen to them so they will learn to take responsibility for their actions. If the player apologizes correctly for the situation they receive a token. If a player lands on “Lose 1 Token” they must forfeit one token. The player at the end of the game who has the most tokens wins.

Introduction: We celebrate Jesus going to heaven on Ascension Thursday (write it on the board). Ascension is the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection. This day comes 40 days after Easter. On Ascension Thursday we pray, sing, and rejoice with Jesus and all the angels and saints. We call it a holy day and celebrate it be participating in Mass. The gospel reading for that day is about the Ascension of Jesus.

Breakfast by the Lake


Objectives: The students will be able to
- retell the story Breakfast by the Lake
- discuss that Jesus was seen by his disciples after his resurrection
- locate Jerusalem and Lake Galilee on a map
- identify who Jesus wanted to take care of His followers



Review:
Prayer, questions and vocabulary words from last week’s lesson



Vocabulary Words: (Write the words on the board and discuss with class)

Jerusalem- the capital of Israel and holy city of the Jews (show students this on a map or have one of the students find it on a map).
Lake Galilee- Israel’s largest freshwater lake. Much of the ministry of Jesus happened on the shores of Lake Galilee (show students this on a map and have the students find it on a map).



Plan:

Read story "Breakfast by the Lake" and then ask questions



Activities:

Introduce activities: Was Jesus seen by his disciples after his resurrection? Discuss with the students when and where they saw Jesus.

Flying Fish Relay- (Players frantically fan their fish across the room into a plate.) A paper plate is positioned across the room. Players lay their fish on the floor and when they are told to “GO!” they fan their fish with a magazine across the room into the plate. The first player to get their fish on the plate is the winner. If it is a team relay race, the first team with all the player’s fish on their plate is the winner.

A fun way to review the names of the disciples. Remove the Judas cards and play one of these games.

*You can also play Old Maid using these cards. Have Judas be the “Old Maid” card. Show the children the “Judas” card and put in the middle of the table for all to see. Put the other Judas card in the deck and shuffle the cards.

The Catholic Toolbox- Breakfast By The Lake (file folder game) In this game players must answer correctly questions about the Bible story to receive a fish to put on their plate. Be careful not to eat all your fish and have to put all of your fish back. The player that reaches FINISH with the most fish on their plate wins.



Snacks:

Introduce snack: Jesus cooked his disciples breakfast. Let’s cook ourselves some breakfast.

Have the students cook themselves an easy breakfast.
