Questions about the parable (Mark 13:34)
• The Master: What does the fact that the "man on a journey" entrusts his servants with authority and tasks say about our relationship with Jesus during his absence?
• The Servants: How does the parable's illustration of assigning "each one his work" apply to your own spiritual gifts, talents, and daily responsibilities?
• The Doorkeeper: Jesus's specific command for the doorkeeper to "stay alert" highlights the need for vigilance in a special way. What role does the doorkeeper play, and how might that role apply to church leaders or individuals today?
Questions about preparedness and urgency (Mark 13:33, 35-37)
• Staying Awake: What does it mean to be spiritually "awake" in contrast to being "asleep"? What habits or distractions in your life might cause you to be spiritually complacent?
• Living in readiness: How would your daily life and priorities change if you genuinely believed Jesus could return at any moment?
• The unknown time: Jesus states that no one, not even the Son, knows the day or hour of his return (Mark 13:32). Why do you think God intentionally kept this information a secret? How does that uncertainty shape our responsibility?
• Warning to "all": In verse 37, Jesus says, "What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'" How does this universal command expand the parable's message beyond the immediate disciples to all generations of believers?
Questions about personal reflection and application
• Current readiness: Looking at your own life, do you consider yourself to be "awake" and "ready" for Jesus's return? What evidence would you point to?
• Hope vs. Fear: Does the idea of Christ's sudden return inspire hope and eager anticipation in you, or does it provoke fear and anxiety? Why?
• Eternal impact: Since everything in this world is temporary, how can you use your time, energy, and resources to focus on things with eternal impact?
