Introduce Game: And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites [to him] to ask him, “Who are you?” (John 1:19)
Who am I?
Need: 1 chair
Directions: The students sit in their own seats while the one who is “It” sits in a chair in front of the room, with his back toward the other students. Someone is chosen by the teacher to go up and stands behind the chair. Then “It” asks the person various questions to guess who the person is. The unknown person must answer the questions truthfully, but can disguise their voice. (Determine the number of questions “It” can ask to person before playing starts.) After the questions have been asked and answered, “It” must guess who the person is. Whether if “It” is right or wrong, the unknown person then becomes “It”.

• Teams must decide who said each quote, writing their answers on a piece of paper.
"Mystery Person":
• One person acts as the "mystery person" and is given a card with a key phrase from John the Baptist's testimony (like "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness").
• Teams guess the concept being acted out.

John 1:6–8
1. What was John the Baptist's purpose?
John was a man "sent from God" to "bear witness about the light" (John 1:6–7). His purpose was to testify about the coming Light, so that through his witness, all might come to believe in Jesus.
2. Why does the passage explicitly state that "He was not the Light" (v. 8)?
The author of the Gospel, John the Apostle, clarifies this point to prevent any confusion about John the Baptist's role. It emphasizes John's humility and subordination to Jesus, ensuring that the focus remains on Jesus as the true Light. The Gospel writer makes this distinction because John the Baptist was a popular and influential figure, and some of his followers may have been tempted to elevate him to the status of the Messiah.
John 1:19–28
3. Who questioned John, and what was their primary motive?
The Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem, including priests, Levites, and Pharisees, sent a delegation to question John. They were surprised and concerned about the stir he was causing by baptizing people and were curious about his authority.
4. Why did John deny being the Christ?
John denied being the Christ to correct any misconceptions and fulfill his purpose as a witness. He knew he was not the Messiah but a messenger sent to prepare the way. This denial also served to point people away from himself and toward Jesus.
5. Why did John deny being Elijah, even though Jesus later indicated he was?
The Jewish leaders were likely asking if John was literally Elijah returned to earth, as they expected the prophet to reappear before the Messiah (Malachi 4:5). John correctly denied being the resurrected Elijah in the flesh. Jesus's later statement (Matthew 17:9–13) meant that John had come "in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Luke 1:17) to fulfill the prophetic role of a forerunner.
6. Who was "the Prophet" the delegation asked about?
This likely refers to the prophet like Moses, whom God promised to raise up in Deuteronomy 18:15–18. By denying this title, John humbly refused to claim any authority beyond his divinely appointed role as a herald.
7. How did John identify himself, and what is the significance of this identification?
John identified himself using the words of Isaiah 40:3, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord'" (v. 23). This declaration confirmed his role as the foretold messenger, emphasizing that his mission was to point to the Messiah, not to be glorified himself.
8. Why did John baptize people if he wasn't the Christ?
When asked about his authority to baptize, John explained that his baptism was with water and was a symbol of repentance. However, his baptism was a preparatory act for the far greater One who was coming, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was meant to prepare hearts to receive the Messiah.
9. What did John mean when he said he was not worthy to untie the strap of the coming One's sandal?
This statement demonstrates John's profound humility and reverence for Jesus. Untying someone's sandals was a task for the lowest servant. John was indicating that his own status was far below that of the Messiah, to whom he was ultimately pointing.
10. What does this passage reveal about the spiritual blindness of the religious leaders?
The interrogation of John reveals that the religious leaders were spiritually blind to Jesus, who was "among [them]" but "do[es] not know [him]" (v. 26). Though they were the supposed religious experts, they failed to recognize the Messiah even after John's clear testimony.
