Common Discussion Questions
These questions are frequently used in Bible studies to explore the passage’s depth:
• Motivation of the Pharisees: Why was the question, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" considered a "test" in the context of first-century Judea?
• Command vs. Permission: Why did Jesus ask what Moses commanded (v. 3), but the Pharisees responded with what Moses permitted (v. 4)?
• Reframing the Issue: How does Jesus shift the conversation from the legalities of ending a marriage to God’s original design in creation?
• The Disciples' Reaction: Why were the disciples so shocked by Jesus’ teaching that they questioned him further "in the house"?
• Childlike Faith: What specifically does it mean to "receive the kingdom of God like a little child"?
• Connecting the Sections: How does the transition from a heavy discussion on divorce to a scene with children change the tone of the passage?

Passage Summary & Key Facts
• The Trap:
The Pharisees’ question was likely a political trap; John the Baptist had recently been beheaded by Herod Antipas for criticizing Herod’s divorce and remarriage.
• The Ruling: Jesus cites Genesis 1 and 2 to argue that marriage is a "one flesh" union joined by God, which human authority should not separate.
• The Exception: While the Pharisees focused on the "certificate of divorce" allowed in Deuteronomy 24:1-4, Jesus characterized this as a concession to "hardness of heart" rather than God’s ideal.
• The Children: When the disciples tried to keep children away, Jesus was "indignant," declaring that the Kingdom of God belongs to those who, like children, are vulnerable and dependent rather than self-sufficient.
