Crafts

daniellesplace.com- Exploding Snake Craft (scroll down to this)
Have students write sins that you can cause others to do on crafts sticks. Weave all the sticks together to make a snake. Tell students that sin can be disastrous to our lives. When we commit one sin it makes it easier to commit even more until pretty soon it takes over our lives. Remove one of the sticks so that the snake explodes to emphasize your point.

equippinglittlehearts.blogspot.com- Sinful Heart
Have students make heart with pocket. Students write sins on small pieces of paper and put inside heart. Jesus stands at our heart's door and knocks quietly. He waits until we ask Him in to help us get rid of our awful sin. When we invite Him in, He gets to work right away getting rid of our sin. Have students read each sin while they clean out their hearts.

From insight.typepad.co.uk- The Gravity Game
Stand a volunteer on a chair, holding one end of a broom or pole. Another volunteer stands on the ground, behind a line drawn a meter in front of the chair, holding the other end of the pole. Explain to the volunteers that they must not let go of the stick, but by pulling and twisting, the first volunteer is to try and pull the second over the line. At the same time the second volunteer has to try and pull the first off the chair. Try this couple of times with different volunteers of similar height and weight. The person on the chair will usually lose. This is because the volunteer on the floor has the extra benefit of gravity, a powerful force pulling downwards. The Bible also describes sin as a powerful force, pulling us down, and separating us from a relationship with God.

Questions on Inclusive Ministry (Verses 38-40)
• Who is "for us"?
How does Jesus' statement "whoever is not against us is for us" change how we view good deeds done by people outside our own religious or social circles?
• The "Us vs. Them" Mentality: Why did John want to stop the man casting out demons? In what ways do we today try to "gatekeep" or control who can do ministry in Jesus' name?
• Recognizing God's Spirit: Can we recognize the "authenticity of the good" even if it comes from an unusual or unpredictable source?

Questions on "Little Ones" and Rewards (Verses 41-42)
• Who are the "Little Ones"?
In our modern society, who are the "little ones" who believe in Jesus?
• Causing Scandal: What does it mean to "cause one of these little ones to stumble"? How do our personal actions or the actions of the Church affect the faith of those who are vulnerable?
• Small Acts of Kindness: What is the significance of the "cup of water" mentioned in verse 41? Does God value small, seemingly insignificant acts of service as much as large miracles?

Questions on the Seriousness of Sin (Verses 43, 45, 47-48)
• Metaphor vs. Literalism: Are Jesus' commands to "cut off your hand" or "pluck out your eye" meant to be taken literally? If not, what radical message is he trying to convey about the cost of discipleship?
• Identifying Stumbling Blocks:
What are the "hands, feet, and eyes" in our own lives that cause us to stumble or sin?
• Prioritizing the Kingdom: Why is it "better to enter life maimed" than to remain whole but apart from God? What temporary comforts or parts of our identity might we need to "cut off" to grow spiritually?
• The Reality of Judgment: How does Jesus' description of Gehenna ("where their worm does not die") emphasize the eternal consequences of unrepented sin?

What are some practical ways to live out the lessons of Mark 9:38-48 in daily life?
