Other Activities:

1. Compare and find the differences in Luke's "Sermon on the Plain" (6:20-49) and Matthew's "Sermon on the Mount" (5:1-12). Write on the board two columns one with Luke and the other with Matthew and find out how they are alike and different.

2. What is Jesus saying in the “Sermon on the Plain”? Work with the students in helping them understand what Jesus is saying in these verses. Do this on the board or have a discussion with the class. Or break the students into groups and assign them one of the verses and to briefly define what Jesus is saying. Discuss.

Contextual Questions (Luke 6:17)
• The Setting:
Verse 17 mentions Jesus stood on a "level place." How does this setting compare to the more famous "Sermon on the Mount" in Matthew 5–7? Does the physical location (a plain vs. a mountain) change how you perceive Jesus' accessibility to the crowds?
• The Audience: The text lists three distinct groups: the twelve apostles, a great company of disciples, and a large crowd from across the region. Why is it significant that Jesus’ words in verses 20–26 are specifically directed "looking at his disciples"?
• The Sacrifice: Some people traveled over 100 miles to hear Jesus. What does this tell you about their level of desperation or hope?

The Four Blessings (Luke 6:20–23)
• Defining "Blessed":
How does the modern world define being "blessed" compared to Jesus' definition in these verses?
• Literal vs. Spiritual: In Matthew, Jesus says "blessed are the poor in spirit," but in Luke, he simply says "blessed are you who are poor." Do you think Jesus is talking about literal material poverty, or a spiritual state?
• The "Great Reversal": Why does Jesus refer to hunger, sadness, and rejection as blessings? How can suffering or loneliness actually be "helpful to our souls"?
• Rejoicing in Rejection: Verse 23 tells disciples to "leap for joy" when they are hated or excluded for the Son of Man's sake. Have you ever felt excluded because of your faith? How does this verse change your perspective on that experience?

The Four Woes (Luke 6:24–26)
• The Warning:
Jesus issues "woes" to those who are rich, well-fed, laughing, and well-spoken of. Does this mean Jesus is "anti-wealth" or "anti-happiness," or is he warning against something deeper?
• Consolation Now vs. Later: Verse 24 says the rich have "already received their comfort." What are the dangers of finding ultimate satisfaction in worldly things rather than in God?
• The Trap of Popularity: Verse 26 warns against everyone speaking well of you. Why is a high social reputation often at odds with being a true disciple?

Application & Reflection
• Modern Reception:
If Jesus preached this sermon in your community today, how would people respond?
• Identifying with the Text: If you were to honestly assess your life, do you currently identify more with those who are "blessed" (the hurting) or those who are "warned" (the comfortable)?
• Actionable Steps: What is one specific way you can "pursue satisfaction in God" this week rather than in material comfort?
